2024/2025 Blue Bombers Off-Season Thread
JuranBoldenRules replied to TBURGESS's topic in Blue Bomber Discussion
No kidding. I don't think teams ruin a lot of guys. The high level NCAA guys are already running their own show. Most of the decent U Sports guys these days are too. Anyone going to even that level is taking charge of their own development when they are 14-15. They know how to train themselves and their technical abilities are pretty baked in. Nobody at a club level is practicing in a way that's going change that in this era. You're mostly getting set to play games, not playing around with mechanics. People can complain about opportunity but no one with undeniable ability was ever denied at that position. Everyone is dying for consistently average QB play. There's no other position where you get a chance to develop like that in football, other than maybe Canadian OL in this league. We're splitting hairs on guys who really aren't at the level of the guys who are franchise QB's because we maybe saw a flash that made us hope the guy was something he wasn't. I think a lot of teams see some redeeming quality that allows them to overlook severe flaws in potential quarterbacks. Like Alex Brink not being able to pass the ball yet spending like 4 years here as QB in waiting. People would be shocked at how even at pretty high levels coaches are still in awe of guys who are throwers with no passing ability. Like people in our city making a living training QB's and sometimes other football players who get themselves involved in provincial teams and cannot evaluate them at all...even in the scenario of "we play games next month, who of the 4 QB's that we've just repped and worked with for 6 weeks is the best at moving the offense we've installed." Or totally blinded by an athlete who can't pass with any accuracy. Draw up a lot of plays for what you could do off RPO looks but no matter what you draw the guy can't pass well enough to execute anything accurately and consistently. Reads are a huge thing, arguably THE huge thing, get on same page with receivers, do things at speed. Even if you can put it on a spot 70 yards away, doesn't matter if you can't make a decision on time. That was a big Lapo flaw back to the CFL. If a QB can't attack at all 3 levels as a passer they really can't run a good CFL offense. Everything else will simply be adjusted to over a season by other good teams. Sure you can catch someone lacking and have your QB run for 170 yards sometime, but it's not happening every week. -

How did Dru Brown develop? 4th string for a year, time share backup with Prukop in 22, then established #2 in 23. Starts 3 games in 3 seasons. -

I'd be pretty surprised if Wheatfall made the opening roster, barring injuries. D Mitchell is kind of the speed element at all levels and screen game, kind of your Lawler replacement. Wheatfall hasn't really looked good on anything but a couple verticals, and really hasn't finished a ton of plays. Could be a 2nd year breakout candidate I guess but just don't see a spot for him to get on Game 1. He'd be a PR guy again if he doesn't get beat out by someone who looks like a better fit. To me White Jr and Stearns are in a battle for the 3rd slot position. Maybe can get both on if Stearns can return. If White is in good health I could see him and Schoen (if he's healthy too) being devastating targets down the middle. -

Would be late season if he does. NFL final cuts are week leading up to Labour Day. -

Chris Jones is actually one of the worst for wanting exactly what he wants at certain positions to the detriment of building a good football team, particularly on defense. -

Honestly don't think it makes much of a difference. Opens up a spot for a special teamer. Makonzo is a depth piece. -

It's honestly not that hard to defend. You have to leave an eligible receiver so wide open he can kick the ball from behind the line of scrimmage and recover it himself on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Be aware of the all the eligible receivers on 2nd and long and it's not going to work ever. -

It's way too early. The local sports media are all over the Jets. Most outlets only have 1-2 reporters. If Edmonton makes the SCF they are going to have a hard time getting numbers as a league for regular season games. Wish they'd go back to the season starting on Canada Day. -

More ways to apply rules they won't understand or refuse to actually apply. Good in theory for player safety but we'll just see fewer flags or more excuses for why the rule doesn't apply. If there's no standard coming from the review booth, won't matter much. -

Case was decent on returns last year. If they gave him some run to focus on it I'm sure he'd be dangerous but also just get you 10 yards every time. Both Mitchell's are the style of trying to break one every single time which is great the one time every half season they break one, not so great when they lose you 5 yards trying to outrun contain. Cobb had better return #'s on same squad than D Mitchell. Overall I expect our special teams units to be more athletic, physical and consistent. That was really prioritized in the off-season. -

That type of low accountability, toxic culture, seems to follow Rick Campbell around. Can't out-talent that. -

I hope we are bringing in Dayton Black. Even if he isn't good enough to win a starting spot, nice depth and type of guy who is athletic enough to be quite useful as a 6th or 7th guy. -

I think the CFL should have a Canadian kicker program like they do for QB's. -

You're talking about "Designated Nationalized Americans." That's separate. These Nationalized Americans are 1 of the 24 starters for the purposes of the ratio. It's kind of perfect for a OL spot who plays every snap. You'd have to have a Canadian backup though, but we usually do on OL anyways. Bombers could start a Canadian at linebacker and use DNA on Kyrie Wilson who could then sub in for an American at any time or sub in for those designated Canadians for up to 23 snaps. Or do the same with Jefferson...if subbed in for American doesn't count to the restriction but could sub in for Canadian spot up to 23 snaps in a game. -

The designated one is not a starter. You can count a nationalized American as your 8th Canadian starter, who can play unlimited. Nationalized Americans Nationalized American players are defined as having played with their current team for 3 years or at least 5 years in the League. One Nationalized American player may be listed as one of the eight National starters. -

Important to remember that for officiating purposes all the teams do is declare how many Canadians are playing on O and D, and who the DI's are. It's possible to sub an American for a Canadian if you're regularly using more Canadians on a side of the ball than you declared. If they go 8-9 Nationals as functional players, someone like Logan could be used as a sub and not classified as a DI. You just need to have the right number of Canadians on the field at all times. So if you had 6 Canadians on the field for O but only declared 5 on O, 2 on D, you can sub Logan in for anyone. But I think it will be hard to find that 6th Canadian unless they force a 3rd receiver out there. Gotta think they will list Bryant or Jefferson as a nationalized American. Vulnerabilities for us are Oliviera and Demski in terms of injury IMO. You need to have a solid plan to get out of a game without them. -

A couple things.... What makes the roster weakest is not being able to pass protect. If they need 3 imports on the OL to be sure of that, they need to do it. We probably win 5 straight Grey Cups with a consistent B+ OL instead of a C- OL trying to round into form/get healthy at the end of the season, 2023-24 especially. That's priority over any other spot. You figure the other spots out, build the OL you need to win first. The biggest roster issue on O is how you back up Oliviera with 5 O starters. Need another Canadian tailback to show they can handle some work, or another Canadian receiver to step up. Alternative is being able to flip to another Canadian on D but that would not be possible during a game. I think we are likely to be disappointed again with our American playmakers on O if there aren't a couple rookies ready to step in and step up. Bailey started all 12 games last year at Weber State and was named to the FCS Central All-American Third Team and All-Big Sky second team honours after adding 18.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks. We'd be pretty happy to have an American prospect coming in off a season like that. -

Think of the baseball league the Goldeyes play in. Would be like that. Pay guys $750-$1000 per game for 6 games. The real draw is the ability to get film and for the teams to get a better look at guys who are those 5th-8th round picks, undrafted. Keep them active so there is a pool of guys ready to go. Also coach development. If they played early enough could even get some coaches out who are working with U Sports programs. Probably $3-$4 million a year to run the whole thing. Use it to engage some markets that aren't close to CFL teams. Partner with U Sports for facilities (keep in mind for Atlantic there's club football and nice facilities for that too Halifax, Fredericton, Moncton). -

Time for a CFL minor league. Stick it in the Atlantic. Have 4-6 teams. There's another 200 players developing. Guarantee you can convince that many guys to play for a few years to stay active for a chance coming out of U Sports and CJFL. Develop Canadian players, let the QB's you want to develop get live reps. -

Bombers just signed a tailback out of Liberty who had 425 carries and 2655 yards the past two NCAA seasons...only 7 catches over the 2 seasons. -

I believe in him as well. But the offense he needs to be successful and the one that fits Collaros style are extremely different Streveler is more RPO, less vertical/drop back style and I think he can be very useful if he stays healthy. But that's the rub. No one is going to bank on him playing 14 or 15 games in a season. I hope we make use of his skills generally even if he's not the starter, and that we don't have him running wedge plays. Build that run/RPO package for short-yardage around his skills. -

It's kind of a weird situation because Streveler and Patterson are so limited as passers. You'd think you'd want one veteran backup who can sling it a bit at least, so basically to my mind if you dress one of the first two you need a Wilson or Dolegala type as the other QB dressed. -

It's actually interesting to me he was still picked that high. Because now he's out of football for a year before he gets to come in to the CFL camp. He's not going to have any opportunity aside from training himself to develop as a football player. Have to kind of hope he keeps his head in. -

Almost every FBS/FCS football player is taking offers every time the portal opens. Every FBS QB is getting over six figures. This is a story about Mark Gronowski who is on Bombers neg list and has been South Dakota State starter for 4 years. Could have went pro this year, stayed in NCAA and went to Iowa for a "seven-figure" guarantee. This guy is not really a NFL prospect as a passer. Like maybe get drafted in 5th-6th-7th round, maybe but not likely. https://brobible.com/sports/article/mark-gronowski-iowa-nil-deal-seven-figure-college-football/
