  1. I don't really think there is a need for each viewpoint to be so extreme.  I think we all know the score itself is irrelevant and understand that only a few players from the roster last night will actually make the team.

Still, I understand the concern with the roster too.  Injuries are inevitable and obviously it'd be a lot better if some of the young guys played well.  At some point this year we may need these backups to win a game...or several.  The "big" position being QB, I think people have valid concerns and worries about the backups.

I guess to sum up I don't think its time to panic, but I also don't think anyone needs to plug their ears and pretend that absolutely, positively everything about preseason games are meaningless.  That's false.  Scores and schemes are (since most playbooks are vanilla at this point) but player evaluation is important in the exhibitions.  That's really the whole point of them.

  2. yeah, it's one of those damned if you do - damned if you don't scenarios... but at least if they'd have done it Mike's way they could've put the cash (and more time) into finding Hefney's replacement at HB/Nickel

Really depends on how much emphasis you point on the money and time. Personally I don't think either are huge issues. Regarding the money, I doubt getting rid of Hefney would have resulted in us going out and landing someone else or even handing out a bigger deal to someone but that's just my opinion. The time concern is minimal. No different than other player cuts. We won't be the only team to cut a starter, this is whole purpose of camp. If you don't perform you lose your spot.

  3. but Mike's point still stands: they could've parted ways before giving him a salary bonus...

The conversation would be a lot different if they had cut him in January.  Whereas we're arguing about money right now, I think people would have been more upset had we not brought him to camp.  It's not like the Bombers are in a position to let go of ANY talent they have right now, even if a player like Hefney had a big drop off last year.  This is even excluding the party the media and some fans would have had to pull out their overused meme of "THE BOMBERS ARE CHEEEEEEEAAAAP!"

  4. So why is this NOT a conversation they had before giving him a huge signing bonus in January? Burke is not a new coach, he had time to figure this out.

This is just a stupid move altogether.

Is the money really that big an issue?  Maybe Burke wanted to see if Hef could step up his play this year in camp and Hef didn't do enough to survive.  Also the pot charge could have affected it as well and that was new info.

  5. I have no problem with the team getting rid of Hefney.... what I don't like is the fact that they couldn't trade him for anything???   How in the world can they not get anything not even a late pick at least for him.   At least that way we can dictate where he goes to so he isn't playing for Toronto which more then likely what will happen??

How can they make a rash decision cutting him but don't have the cahjones to cut Pierce who clearly is on a huge decline.

The odds of this blowing up in our face is much higher then it working out in the end.....

Once you're on the trading block teams have the option to wait it out for his release if there isn't a high demand.  Hefney will land somewhere quickly, but I doubt teams were THAT interested that they were willing to give something up for him.

  6. what i dont understand is Burke is willing to cut vets who he think lost a step but continually cuddle Pierce who is not productive for the majority of his stay in Blue&Gold.

I think we've seen Pierce has his own set of rules now (not that I agree with it - I am firmly in favour of starting NotBuckPierce at QB).

  7. Honestly not completely surprised by this.  Let's look at what was working against him:

    - Decreased play last year

    - Made some negative headlines with Twitter

    - Burke unhappy with the veteran defensive backs

    - Hefney's pot charge comes out

    - Bombers look awful on Wednesday

Obviously not all those are weighted equally but things piled up against him.

  8. If that were true you wouldn't see certain players perform better with certain people coaching. The key to coaching these days is really understanding what makes each individual player tick so you can get the best out of them every single day. Time have changed from the days when you just expected players to show up and be their best and if not the coach cracks the whip on them.

I would argue that the reason players perform better with different coaches is that the other coach or coaches have found better ways to get more out of him with a scheme, less because they were able to inspire them.

  9. I agree with the last 80% of your post.  It will get better and people will figure it out.  But I don't agree that people weren't saying leaving two hours early should be the solution.  Anyway, I'm sure it will be manageable at some point soon.  We need to get back to arguing about Joe Mack on here.

Surely I can't be the only one who left 1.5 to 2 hours before a game to get to Canad Inns.  The people who now have to leave that early to get to IGF will get used to it or find another way to get to the game.

  10. I think it's a bigger issue with not getting a coach that can inspire the players. Lapo was so passive and I don't think he was any screaming hell for firing up a team, and based on the evidence we have they respond even less to Burke... If this year doesn't work out then I think we can clearly say that Mack failed at being able to identify a quality head coach.

Personally I feel like the ability to "inspire" or "motivate" is overblown.  These guys shouldn't need motivation and if they do then maybe that's been the problem all along. Really I'd rather just have a coach that excels at the Xs and Os of the game.

  11. I dunno, people at the south end would leave 1h+ before hand to make it to Canad Inns stadium. If you're willing to walk 30 mins (not much more than I walked at Canad Inns), there won't be any traffic issues at all.

Bingo.  Leave early, park somewhere and walk in to the stadium.  Did it for years at the old one and while I realize that I have benefitted from the location change, I think others will find a plan that works for them.
