Semantics, man. Not given a fair chance to play vs unfairly cut aren't much different as blame is being pointed at the Bomber organization. I don't know what your point is here. You're the one saying Simonise didn't get a fair chance & then you turn around & say you don't know what went on behind closed doors or at practice. So then, how can you make a statement that it was the Bombers who weren't fair to Simonise? They saw him everyday,  his commitment & work habits. Being released by two CFL teams in back to back years say it's a little more than that.

the issue is you're the one talking about Simonise and have repeatedly compared him directly to Oleary-Orange. I have not once compared the two or called them similar, you're changing the topic. Whether Simonise was unfairly cut or not that does not have any impact on the current prospect.

Once again, would you prefer them draft small slow recievers? I'm happy they took a guy who played D1, was injured and has outstanding athleticism at pick number 37, just my opinion.

Thought you said he didn't get a fair chance here? Now you're saying he wanted to go back home.? So again, it was his decision derailing his career.  Are you posting on Lionbackers saying he didn't get a fair chance with the Lions as well?

I think you're purposely misreading what I said. I said he did not get a chance to play, not that he was unfairly cut. I do not know what happened behind closed doors or during practice, regardless I was talking about O'leary-Orange so Simonise is irrelevant.

The thread wasn't derailed. It had already gone to Simonise and if he'd had a fair chance or not. Just GN20 miss reading one of my posts again then whining about it. It's kinda his shtick.

The thread was derailed a long time ago when I made a comment about one of the draft picks and got flamed because a player drafted a couple years ago didn't work out.

He's been cut by the Bengals, the Bombers & the Lions. How can you say he hasn't had any real opportunities?  One NFL & 2 CFL teams gave him opportunities. He had an opportunity with the Dinos but blew that when he was ruled academically ineligible to play for the Dinos.  That would definitely raise a red flag by any pro team. If a player isn't disciplined to put in the time to  study in university then how can he be expected to be disciplined to learn the intricacies of an NFL or CFL playbook?

After dropping out of university he failed a drug test & tested positive for a banned substance when he was at the Bengals training camp. Then his CFL draft year deferred to 2018 from 2017 because of it.

In a real head scratcher, after being cut by the Bengals he went to play junior ball with the Okanagan Sun. How would playing against mostly kids a year or two out of high school make him a better player after going to an NFL camp? Why not sign with an Arena League team or stay in the US to train & get better??

Still he got drafted by the Bombers even though he never dominated as a junior player with the Sun. The he was cut by the Bombers after 2 seasons here & last season with the Lions. To me, all this falls on the player & not the teams who cut him. Simonise decided himself to take the long & hard road to the pros. It didn't have to be that way so it was his decision. He was given chances. In some cases more than one. It' was up to Simonise to take advantage of what was given him. Looks like he didn't.  Bad decisions played a part. Maybe the reality is he wasn't good enough.

Can you read? I clearly said I didn't think he got a chance to play HERE (which is true unarguably since he didn't). Pretty simple statement.

A friend of mine was in camp with the bombers last year. He told me Simonise was out of it at camp. Seemed like he was not engaged at all. Also there was a story about when they went around the room and introduced themselves on the first day he said something really strange. Gave my buddy the impression he was not that bright.

fair enough, either way he seemed like he wanted to go home and had a better chance to play in BC.

I honestly think people are being a little too hard on Simonise. He's young and hasn't really been given much opportunity yet. Lots of NAT receivers don't come into their own in their first couple years. Here in Winnipeg he just got stuck behind a pretty darned good trio of NAT receivers who deserved the playing time they got, and in BC the Lions were not in a position to give him much opportunity because they could not realistically give developmental reps to him. I would like to see his next year before declaring him a bust. There are plenty of reliable NAT receivers who did bupkus their first couple years before getting their chance.

This. I don't think he ever even got a real opportunity here.

    Spoken like a true athlete.

Not to diminish your experiences or expertise but I notice that people who do have a high level athletic background value pure athleticism more, and my theory is everyone is looking at things from their own perspective of "if I could do the things that guy does physically nothing would have stopped me"

To me the work ethic and attitude and brains are a bigger factor than purely measurables. I mean if you're simply unable to physically perform the task yeah measurables are a big deal, but given that it's a team sport the individual athleticism in my perspective is secondary to a lot of other factors.

None of the prospects are finished products, when you draft a guy that's 6'4 and runs a 4.40 you're getting a guy who at least has the athletic pedigree and with the right coaching can succeed. As fans we don't know the mental aspect of how these guys are as teammates or how hard they work, that's all speculation and something I try not to get into.

Absolutely disagree...at least, not ENTIRELY.....measurables are just a small part of it.

and the fact that he has had multiple injuries pushed him down the draft board, watching his tape you can see that he can play. Whether that translates to the CFL that is to be determined but I think they got good value for where they were drafting. By no means do I think he should have gone in the first round but in terms of upside, to me he's most intriguing.

Listen...you're new here. You showed up right around the draft and started defending this kid out of Nevada, which makes me believe you either are him or the family (most likely)...it happens regularly. Thank you for joining the conversation.  Most of us have been around a long time, and have seen some ****. It's the "NFL body type with an injury history so he fell to the later rounds" thing that is HIGHLY suspicious because we have seen it so many times before..... most notably with Rashaun Simonise a few years ago.

Nobody is saying FOR SURE that Orange isn't going to pan out......it's just that there's sufficient evidence to be highly skeptical until proven otherwise.

Classic. I'm just an informed fan who observed the draft and making personal reviews of the draft picks. If you want to bring past biases in to cloud your judgment of the current draft that's on you and that's why my observations are more valuable.

Boy you sure missed the point...

Being a great athlete helps, but everyone in a professional league is a great athlete and it takes more than that to be successful. Everyone here hopes that every single draft pick this team makes works out, but we have all seen too many to count players who have great athleticism fail to make an impact to get excited JUST because a guy is a so called "NFL Athlete"

People bring up Simonise because he's a recent example of just that but we can go through a bunch of them. Bottom line every player on this team has to earn their spot and most of us take a wait and see approach to prospects.

boy you sure missed the point. Drafting a player with NFL level athleticism in the 3rd round is generally considered a good thing. You're all acting like I said he is going to be the next Milt Stegall or something. This is a draft and reasonable people base their reviews on measurable things.

    just me though.

Being an “NFL athlete” doesn’t guarantee a thing in the CFL. I like the fact that he was drafted by the Bomber but its remain to be seen if he will sign with the team and will remain healthy enough to stay.

the whole "NFL Athlete" thing doesn't mean **** to me after Rashaun Simonise...

Or any other number of players.

yeah because one player doesn't pan out you're done drafting big, fast receivers, reasonable.

Welcome to our board.......same was said about a guy we took a couple years ago. So, again, we all hope for the best, but it remains to be seen.

Of course, pretty much every draft pick is a gamble to varying degrees. Based on his measurables he is an NFL athlete.
