  1. I still don't think Reilly was the big mistake in the offseason qb situation. Does anyone really think he'd be having any more success here than any other qb has had recently? Since Matthews decided to have a sophmore slump some kind of bad and Edwards kept getting older there's no one like Stamps here for him to toss passes up to, he'd still be dealing with a horrendous offensive line, he'd have the same **** playcalling etc etc. The mistake was sticking with Pierce (at the head coaches and offensive coordinators insistence mind you) and dumping the guy who started to show some ability to have success with this offense last season. Choosing Pierce over Elliott was the big mistake of the offseason and that's as much to do with the coaches as the GM. The coaches liked one guy and didn't like the other despite one clearly having more success in the situation than the other. (and we're not talking huge amounts or anything but it's still what it is)

isn't it funny how in the offseason several of us were saying that the decision to stick with Pierce was going to cost a lot of people their jobs?

Sure he would have similar success here.  O-line in Edmonton is just as bad as Winnipeg's and In some games Stamps barely sees the ball yet Rielly still puts up good numbers.

Both teams are awful but Edmonton is closer to taking the next step now that they have a legit starting QB.  Winnipeg is no better than they were 4 years ago (except we have more draft picks) and we still don't even have an average QB.

  2. people that keep saying that Reilly was a toss of the dice or a gamble are really doing the player personnel people who would've watched all his tape, gone to his games (and perhaps practices and workouts) talked to his coaches past and present, analysed his style of play and physical tools, and yes... likely talked to both Reilly and his agent in a shocking (lol) violation of tampering rules an injustice.

is any QB a sure thing? no... so i guess there's always an unknown element that makes up the "luck" side of the equation.

but to imply that a GM (who's name doesn't rhyme with Bill-Pan) makes a big move like this on a whim is a disservice to the many professionals who get paid to render science from the ineffable qualities of a player.

Hervey and his people knew that Reilly was their man because they researched it and then moved decisively and in so doing, boxed out the pusillanimous GM in Winnipeg. they may have been making a mistake, but they were acting on their best intel, and they trusted it enough to act.

I need to pull out the old thesaurus when I read some of your posts bluto lol

  3. Bo Levi Mitchell came through in the clutch. Great young qb. Nothing seems to faze the guy. I'd say the best of all the young guns in the CFL. He made a couple of mistakes early with the interception & fumble but he didn't let it rattle him. BLM just went on to the next play & forgot it so props to him for being so poised.

Bo Levi sure came on strong in the second half. Hank had a great start & faded when the pressure was on as Hank always does. He got to 50,000 yds career CFL passing, threw for nearly 400 yds & still lost. That pick he threw late in the 4th quarter was inexcusable for a 15 year veteran. After the game Hank was inteviewed & said he has to learn from his mistakes & get better. Like huh?? A 15 year veteran serves up a brain fart on a play like that & he still says he has to learn from his mistakes?? Whatever happened to ball security being the first priority in field goal range??? That is why Hank's not missed in Calgary. And why he is going to drive Hamilton fans nuts like he did the fans in Calgary & Kent Austin will want to strangle him.

Yeah, when I saw that lame duck he threw up I laughed.  That's a panic throw you might expect a young Qb to make, not a 15-year veteran.  The smart thing for a veteran QB to do would have been to take the sack or even throw it out of bounds and at least get a field goal out of the series. Then I remembered it was Henry Burris and it's par for the course.  A future hall of famer, sure, but due to his underwhelming playoff record and the countless questionable plays in key situations such as last night, he will never be considered a top-10 QB of all-time.

  4.

Joe Mack AKA Mr. Dithers really messed this one up.  He waited too long to release Elliott and Brink and by the time he did, Reilly was signed, sealed and delivered to the Esks.  And as far as those who claim Burke would have started Buck anyways, that's on Mack as well.

Never did believe those silly stories about Edmonton being closer to Washington as the deciding factor for Reilly.  This article pretty much confirms.

What makes it worse is that Mack could have had Glenn for a second or third rounder and yet he didn't pull the trigger.  Man definitely didn't appreciate how important the QB position was and over-estimated his ability in finding QBs (and most other positions on the Bombers as it turns out) in the US.

His parents drive from Montana for every game.  I went on a roadtrip to Montana last summer and it's two full days of driving from here.  That could very well have been a factor.  The only closer CFL city to where Reilly's family lives is Calgary.  If Reilly thought he couldn't win the job from Buck, Elliott and Brink while having a starters contract in his back pocket, he must have low self-esteem.

Not a lack of self-esteem, more of a lack of confidence in management in making a prudent decision.  Hard to prove yourself with a million Qbs in camp - limited reps in exhibition games.  Mack blew it by not releasing one or both of them earlier instead of dithering around although it's doubtful he would have taken a chance swapping picks to speak with Reilly (would have been worth risk for a QB).

As for Montana, I can drive there in eight hours.  That's a days drive.  Depends on the part of the state his parents are from I guess.  It's not like arrangements couldn't have been made to get his parents to games here anyways.

  5. he didn't get a lot of time to throw, but when he did, Goltz looked pretty lost half the time- held on to the ball too long and turned it over twice. His long successful long throws seem to always be contested - a sign of an underthrown ball.  As said by another poster, he is a good straight line runner, but not evasive whatsoever, certainly not as evasive as Reilly.  Consistently gets caught in the backfield.  Five starts and not one OK outing (closest was BC game), let alone good outing.

Over the past 25 years, a quarterback who has not strung together a few good outings by their tenth start will almost certainly not become a bonifide starting QB in the CFL.  Only exceptions are Calvillo and maybe McManus.  I guess Goltz technically would have a few starts left before he hits that magical 10-game mark, but given that he hasn't shown any progress over the past two months, I'd be surprised if he ever starts again.  Probably just get in the game when near the opposition goal line or short yardage situations.

I think we will see Hall start for 4 or 5 games and possibly one or both of the other two for the remaining 2 or 3 since there's a good chance of injury.

  7. JuranBoldenRules how about this?  If the Ticats don't exist, there's a good chance that either

    A) the soccer matches are held at a newly constructed or existing stadium (probably BMO) in Toronto

    or

the soccer matches are held in Hamilton but in a smaller facility (say 5,000 - 10,000  permanent seats) with several thousand temporary seats

However, since the Ticats exist, the PanAm officials and the province decided to build a stadium in Hamilton for soccer matches  (supposed to have track and field and a few other things but all that was kiboshed) to not only serve as a legacy project for the city -allowing the stadium to be used for amateur events and an eventual NASL (tier 2) soccer team - but also as a new home for the Ticats.

I think what some of the posters here are trying to say is that if the Pan Am games weren't taking place in TO/Hamilton, then no money would be forthcoming from the province or the city for a new football stadium.  IMO, the best they could have hoped for was a renovation to upgrade Ivor Wynne which would have been lipstick on a pig.

As for cost overruns on our stadium, I have heard on another forum that it could be in excess of 20% so $240-$250 million total.
