The smart folks at Skyscrapgerpage are alluding to a rumour that the Province will allow open drinking at the Forks.  ie. an expanded licensed area.  Someone said "a chunk (of The Forks) being licensed is an understatement".  I've often thought this makes sense.  When there are events going on there and they shoe horn people into a beer gardens.  Just let people drink throughout the area during specific times.

Would be a major development though, almost unheard of around these parts.

It was a shame last summer to not be able to take drinks from The Common to an outdoor seating area. The existing restaurants that have patio space there are really crappy.

Yeah someone else assumed that it would just be the area around the Common but someone else suggested it was much bigger...which made me think the entire Forks.

I dont head out there often but at, say, Pride, especially when the weather is really good, I've waited in line to get into the beer garden and you just feel like you're totally separated from the rest of the festivites.  Let the whole area be licensed with pop up bars.  More money for everyone, probably more people attracted and there is little negative.  People who stumble up with their paper bags will do that any way.  The big concern would be underage drinking, but again, a 16 year old who really wants a beer will get one.  Just have enhanced security checking ID from time to time.

Other places do it.  So its fine.

What did they do for the Jets playoff parties?  Was the entire area licensed?

https://www.cheknews.ca/air-canada-westjet-purchased-safety-option-reportedly-missing-on-crashed-planes-545467/

TORONTO— Canada’s two largest airlines have at least one of the optional safety features on their Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft that were reportedly lacking on the jets that crashed in Ethiopia and Indonesia.

Air Canada and WestJet Airlines both say they purchased disagree lights used by the aircraft’s software system during flight to avert stalls.

The New York Times has reported the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air jets involved in recent fatal crashes were not equipped with angle of attack indicators and disagree lights.

The safety features are not standard on the aircraft and are offered by Boeing as upgrades

However, WestJet spokeswoman Morgan Bell said the Calgary-based airline’s 13 Max 8 planes are not configured with the angle of attack indicators.

She said the disagree light was purchased so the new aircraft will have common configurations with its Boeing 737 NG fleet.

The safety indicators help pilots detect any erroneous readings from two vanelike sensors that determine the position of the plane’s nose relative to oncoming air.

The angle of attack indicator displays the readings of the two sensors while the disagree light is activated if the sensors don’t provide the same information, the U.S. daily said.

The MCAS system can automatically push the plane’s nose down to prevent stalling if it determines it is pointing up at a dangerous level.

The New York Times also said, citing unnamed sources, that Boeing will soon update the MCAS software and make the disagree light standard on all new 737 Max planes, but maintain the angle of attack indicator as an option.

Boeing is rushing to complete the upgrades on jets by early next week, according to a person familiar with the changes.

Air Canada has removed its grounded Boeing 737 Max 8 jets from service until at least July 1 in order to provide more certainty for passengers who wish to book flights in the coming months.

Both Air Canada and WestJet have suspended their 2019 financial guidances.

This one is from the CBC.ca archives but was on the CBC Manitoba main page. It's not quite "news" but I did learn something new.

It's a story about the Loonie

A dollar coin was coming in 1986

It was to be "gold-coloured, 11-sided, and only slightly heavier than a quarter," said reporter Der Hoi Yin as a cascade of sample coins fell in front of the camera.

"When the actual coin is issued ... it will bear the familiar imprint of a voyageur already found on Canadian nickel and silver dollars," she added.

(That didn't happen. The dies for the coin were lost in transit before reaching their destination at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg, necessitating a design change to feature a loon instead.)

Either I never knew this or I had forgotten but the Loonie was almost not the Loonie

I knew the story but  i forgot if they ever found the die. The voyager design made it onto another coin which i also forgets.

That’s an interesting twist

"After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case."

Settlement.

(CNN) — A Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft from the fleet that was grounded after two deadly crashes made an emergency landing in Florida on Tuesday.

No passengers were aboard Southwest Airlines Flight 8701, which was being ferried from Orlando International Airport to Victorville, California, for short-term storage during the grounding, the airline said.

Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, the two pilots aboard the flight reported "a performance issue with one of the engines shortly after takeoff," the airline said.

"The crew followed protocol and safely landed back at the airport."

Quick update on the Max 8 issue as Boeing is preparing to send out a software update.

Issue:

- There are two Angle of Attack sensors on the Max airplanes but the MCAS system only receives data from one.  When it receives data indicating the AoA is too high, it automatically applies nose-down trim.  This cannot be counteracted by the pilots without killing power to the trim (which most pilots say they were not told).

Changes:

- The MCAS system will use data from both AoA sensors.  if the data is wildly different, MCAS will not trigger.  If MCAS triggers and the pilots apply corrective measures, MCAS will not repeatedly trigger.  This eliminates the Pilot vs Computer battle.

- Two optional features on the Max airplanes include AoA indicators in the cockpit and an AoA disagree indicator.  Both those options will now be standard.

- Increased pilot training

Boeing has had numerous pilots and airline officials out to their plant to go over the changes and put them in practice in simulators and reports indicate pilots are happy with the changes.

I'd suspect the flights will resume shortly.  There is also the FAA investigation concerning how the Max planes were approved and all that jazz....the gist being, Boeing wanted the 737 Max to be close enough to the previous model 737 that pilots required little training to become certified (saving expenses for airlines).  The 737 is like 60 years old and Boeing keeps "updating" it rather then engineering a complete new replacement for this purpose.  Although they are working on replacements for the 757 & 767 that will be brand new builds (797).

While at DHS, Johnson and his team wrote the April 7, 2009 report, "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment." The report, which was intended for law enforcement only, was quickly leaked and caused a firestorm among some on the political right who accused DHS of painting all kinds of conservatives as potential Timothy McVeighs. In fact, it had merely pointed out that some domestic extremists focused on single issues like immigration and abortion and also noted that extremists were interested in recruiting military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Its analysis of the causes of the surge of right-wing radicalism — the election of the nation's first black president and the economy, among other things — still seems completely accurate and is in line with similar findings by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

But DHS ultimately reacted to criticism from conservative columnists (and Republicans) and groups like the American Legion by withdrawing the report. (Ironically, given the criticism of his report, Johnson describes himself as a registered Republican who "personifies conservativism.") In the months following the leak, Johnson says in the interview below, DHS gutted its domestic terrorism analysis unit

Of course the report was accurate. "Withdrawan" by Obama.

Obama could always be counted on to back down, when the going got a bit tough. Republicans are much tougher and more determined /nasty than the Democrats.

Brunei is set to permit the stoning and whipping to death of LGBT+ people under a series of reforms to its penal code that are attracting international condemnation.

New laws due to come into effect next Wednesday will see the tiny kingdom become the first nation in southeast Asia to impose the death penalty for those found engaging in same-sex intercourse.

Homosexuality was already illegal and carried a long jail sentence in Brunei. However, the country is in the process of introducing a sharia law-style system for criminal punishment.

Human rights groups have denounced the move, including Amnesty International, which described the new punishments as “heinous” and “inhumane”.

It said same-sex relations would become a capital offence that could be carried out by whipping or stoning.

There are other countries that permit, and have carried out death sentence for homosexuality.  Just checked.... wikipedia

thirteen countries (or parts of them) impose the death penalty for "Same-sex sexual acts". These countries comprise 6% of the countries in the United Nations. Of these thirteen countries, four are in Africa: Sudan, Nigeria, Somalia, and Mauritania. Nine are in Asia: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Qatar, UAE, Iraq, and Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) territories. None are in the Americas, Europe, or Oceania.

(and carry it out)

fundamentalism at work.
