How much money did Burton leave in those VLTs?? (Rhetorical question)

lol rhetorical is right.  A ton!  He was generous with his booze and weed if he invited you over though (I didnt smoke, but I enjoyed his booze).

He had been longtime friends with the manager of the bar and partied together a lot during the era when Burton sang the national anthem at Jets games.  Burton was "the Sheriff" and the bar manager was "The deputy".  I remember a story where they went all night and Burton had an afternoon game.  They got him to the arena and he was passed out in the green room, carried to the ice level and when it was his time to sing, he suddenly bolted upright, walked out, sang perfectly, walked back and passed out again.

He used to play for us at his home.  And with the same gusto as a concert.  Amazing he can still sing the way he treats his voice.  Great guy though.  Super nice.  One time, I took my then-gf to his house and she was too young to know who he was but I was showing her around and she loved that I was excited.  We get to Burton's bedroom (which was sparse save for a single bed and small TV in the middle of the room).  We're sort of making out and Burton suddenly walks in, is surprised to see us, apologies for interrupting and leaves.

I never went... was it as "friendly" as u-*****-ia?

I started working there in 98.  It was always a university crowd so young, drunk, and yes, lots of hooking up.  But it had a bad rep for fights and the bouncers were pretty rough.  Sort of the end of the old days of bouncing where the bouncer was just a goon.  I got into the bouncing game, first in...94 I think and it was just starting to change.  I tried really hard to clean the Palladium up and it ended up being a really chill, safe place.

Basically, 18-25 year old crowd mostly.  But it was really like a neighborhood bar so all those 20 year olds kept coming even as they aged out of the main demo.  Very fun place to hang out.  Cheap drinks, good music, video screen before that was common.  Speaking of the video screen, I remember one funny story...there was a video (name escapes me now but someone here will remember it....Satisfaction, maybe?) and the video was basically porn.  A woman goes up to the manager and says "this offends me".  So he replies "then dont watch it."  Well, she didnt like that so she called the Winnipeg Sun, who actually did a story about it.

EDIT: And I actually worked at U4IA too... I dated the reigning, defending 'show me your underwear' champion Vanessa, for a few months... those were the days. lol  It was just before Stardust turned into Boogie Nights and I worked inside there...which was truly awesome.  That place was hot as hell for a long time...and a lot of fun.

It had a Pemby vibe, if that makes sense. Mostly locals, kind of chill but still grittier than the Canadinns properties. But, it had a dance floor and dance music, if you weren't interested in just sitting at a table, drinking pitchers of beer.

Kind of like Monty's.

Bouncers were total tossers. :P

Yeah Monty's had a similar vibe, probably because they werent chains like Canad.  I worked at U4IA, Boogie Nights and Scandals from the Canad chains.  We hired a bouncer away from Scandals (or whatever it was called at the time, The Beach, I think) when we renovated into The Lid and he said his boss told him it was the biggest mistake of his life...haha Boy was he glad he made the move.

Personally, I never liked Monty's because it felt a bit too closed in and I knew a couple of the bouncers as....I didnt find the place to be the safest.  But that could just be me.  Sometimes, when you're a bouncer, you always feel on edge when you're out (had a few run ins with people we threw out).  I felt that way at Coyotes too and felt the bouncers were always looking for an excuse to fight.

Canad were kinda the dicks of the industry and often tried to eliminate club courtesy for non Canad employees which caused heat.

Air Canada has said they are planning for no MAX8's through to July 1st...which is a long time.  WestJet looks to be doing a rolling two week shuffle.  And Boeing apparently has a software update coming in the next few days.

I got an email from WestJet this morning telling me about a change to my itinerary. I panicked because, last time, they moved our departure time up 7 hours, which effectively cut a day off our vacay. Anyhow, it was only a change of a few minutes to our departure time. Phew! I'll be worried every time I see a change until we depart.

When is your flight?

I have a trip end of May and it's already super short (two days) so I dont want any changes.  We're only scheduled, thus fare on one MAX8 (on the return) and I was really looking forward to it.  Hopefully things are sorted by then.

Incidentally, the flight ban was only for passenger flights.  Carriers are allowed to fly the MAX8 to re-position them.  WestJet, for example, is using the downtown to convert some of the grounded aircraft to their 2X2 Premium seating ahead of schedule.  Most Westjet planes are in Calgary.  None grounded in Winnipeg.  Air Canada has some MAX8's grounded in Winnipeg though.

Being able to position the aircraft allows them to be close to maintenance areas in case of any required hands on work before MAX8's can fly again.

We're flying to Orlando, via Toronto May 5th to May 16th. All flights are on 737 800s, so no issues there. Just, if they juggle their line-up and cancel flights.

I bet those TO-Orlando flights remain untouched.  I assume they're popular.  Getting to Toronto....they might mess with that but hopefully not.  I know Westjet is surviving by using the larger planes on some routes but those planes are supposed to go into Trans-Atlantic service in the spring.  They might have to lease like Air Canada is doing.  Im sure there is a ton of pressure on Boeing to get this sorted out fast...

I imagine it will get resolved...but the X factor is if governments take a look at how the MAX8 was certified and whether it requires re-certification and re-training by the pilots.

YWG to YYZ is what scares me. The planes should be quite full now. They did cancel an MCO to YYZ flight last month, which is why we were bumped up 7 hours.

It worked out for the best. We were able to add an extra day at the front end of our trip, without change fees, and we get home 4 hours earlier with a shorter layover in YYZ.

We actually get a full extra day and an extra day at Disney, where as we were just going to hang out at the hotel in our original plan.

Must have been a Canadian team in town that afternoon..,

In 1852, when California was just two years old, Thompson began working for Thomas Knott, who owned a store in Placerville. While working in the store, Knott offered Thompson $2 to take mail and messages to his sawmill in Genoa, 90 miles to the east over the snow-covered Sierra Nevada. Instead of using snowshoes, Thompson built 10-foot cross country skis that weighed 25 pounds to traverse the dangerous terrain. They were the first skis anyone had ever seen in the region and, just like that, skiing in Northern California was born.

Later in 1855, Thompson read an article in the Sacramento Union titled People Lost to the World: Uncle Sam Needs Carrier. Past mail carriers had difficulty traversing the snowy mountains and “Uncle Sam” was offering a lucrative contract of $14,000 a year for anyone to take the job. It took a specific specimen to be able to accomplish the task. At six feet, 185 pounds, the sturdy Thompson was able to carry the 100 pound load of mail and ore while simultaneously controlling his massive skis.

stayed at it for twenty years.

The smart folks at Skyscrapgerpage are alluding to a rumour that the Province will allow open drinking at the Forks.  ie. an expanded licensed area.  Someone said "a chunk (of The Forks) being licensed is an understatement".  I've often thought this makes sense.  When there are events going on there and they shoe horn people into a beer gardens.  Just let people drink throughout the area during specific times.

Would be a major development though, almost unheard of around these parts.
