George Mason University recently renamed its law school after the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia -- and then quickly realized the acronym that name created was problematic.

The school first announced it would change the name to The Antonin Scalia School of Law, or ASSoL, after receiving an anonymous $30 million donation on March 31.

Rest of the article is here: http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/05/politics/george-mason-university-antonin-scalia-law-school-name-change/index.html

Personally, I don't think they should have changed it. Based on a number of his comments, ASSoL seems appropriate.

As if we didn't already know this but here's further proof that Sarah Palin is an idiot:

Quote

Former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential hopeful Sarah Palin argued Thursday that Bill Nye is not actually a scientist.

“Bill Nye is as much as scientist as I am,” Palin said at an event in Washington, D.C., according to The Hill. “He’s a kids’ show actor; he’s not a scientist.”

Palin specifically targeted Nye for his statements on global warming, saying he and others who tout the science that says humans are contributing to changes in the Earth’s climate are fueling “alarmism.”

Palin’s criticism came after a showing of a new anti-climate change documentary called “Climate Hustle,” which features a clip of producer Marc Morano interviewing Nye, who regularly speaks out about the negative effects of global warming.

“We’ve been told by fearmongers that global warming is due to man’s activities, and this [film] presents strong arguments against that in a very relatable way,” Palin toldVariety in an interview published Monday.

Palin has a long history of denying that humans contribute to climate change.

Before he was known as “The Science Guy,” Nye worked as an engineer — a job firmly rooted in science — at Boeing. He studied mechanical engineering at Cornell University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1977. In addition to his show, Nye has written several children’s books about science.

During his involvement in the entertainment industry, Nye has also kept up his work in the fields of science and education. He helped design sundials for NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover project, and was a visiting professor at Cornell for several years.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/04/15/manziel-and-friends-reportedly-trashed-rented-house-in-l-a/

Quote

Johnny Manziel may never make it back to the NFL, but he has made it to Page Six.

Emily Smith of the New York Post reports at the tabloid’s notorious celebrity rumor destination that Manziel rented a house in L.A. last week, and that Manziel “and his group” allegedly “left the house strewn with booze and drugs, broke an expensive glass table and a bathroom door, and left wine stains and cigarette burns on carpets.”

Real estate broker Nicholas Goodwin has demanded $32,000 from Manziel for damages inflicted on the $4.5 million house.

“They were supposed to check out at noon. Manziel was passed out,” Goodwin told Page Six. “There was cocaine all over the kitchen table, and mushrooms were still out on the table in front of him. There was booze everywhere . . . broken glasses over the floor and a champagne glass in a tree. If they don’t respond to our demand for compensation, we will sue.”

A demand letter already has been sent by Goodwin’s lawyer to Manziel’s representatives, and images of the house obtained by Page Six “show lines of suspicious white powder on a table, and an opened bag of what is claimed to be magic mushrooms.”

Agent Drew Rosenhaus recently told SiriusXM NFL Radio that Manziel has left L.A. and returned to Texas. Rosenhaus has commenced the process of firing Manziel as a client, in the hopes that Manziel will take steps to turn his life around.

Interesting article.  I know people will decry it because it's the *gasp* Rebel Media, but its very damning.  And I dont mean in a sense of "damn those little Muslim punks", I mean damning of the federal government for not providing the neccesary resources to help the refugees properly transition.

Kids will be kids.  They will rebel and act out and hurt other kids when they are frustrated, angry, sad, depressed, hurt, scared.  I cant imagine what its like for the children coming here, knowing little to no English, a new culture and being expected to just "fit in" and be apart of some wonderful Disney style happy ending.

We know very well about ethnic youth gangs that are very, very violent.  Happens right here in Winnipeg.  No providing the resources required to help these familys and children is a recipe for disaster.

And sweeping it under the carpet is irresponsible.

DNA profile suggests Giesbrecht is mother of babies found in locker

By: Mike McIntyre/WFP

Andrea Giesbrecht is believed to be the mother of all six babies found inside a Winnipeg storage locker, court heard Wednesday.

Forensic specialists were able to build DNA profiles from tissue, organ and bone samples taken from the human remains which were discovered at the U-Haul facility on McPhillips Street in October 2014. They then compared the profiles with one developed from a used sanitary napkin seized by police during a court-authorized search of Giesbrecht's home.

All six matched. Giesbrecht's husband also provided a voluntary blood sample which suggested he was the father of all the infants.

Court has not heard whether he was even aware his wife was pregnant, when the pregnancies occurred or how the babies were delivered. That information may emerge later during the trial. Lawyers have filed a document showing Giesbrecht's husband had a vasectomy in 2011.

There is one caveat, however, to declaring with absolute certainty that Giesbrecht is the mother. Defence lawyer Greg Brodsky is challenging the admissibility of the used sanitary napkin, arguing it was obtained illegally by police. He is also not conceding blood on the item belonged to his client.

The Crown intends to argue there is only one obvious inference to draw, given that Giesbrecht, 42, was the only adult female living in her home. But provincial court Judge Murray Thompson will have to make a ruling on that issue later in this case.

It's not clear how relevant the issue is to the case at hand; Giesbrecht is charged with six counts of concealing a child's body, and whether she was the biological mother of those children's bodies is not necessary to prove the offence.

Court also heard Wednesday that forensic specialists determined the remains belonged to five boys and one girl. They were not able to "age" the remains to say when they were born, or under what conditions. The official causes of death have been listed as "undetermined."

Brodsky has previously said he believes the remains are likely more than a decade old. He is challenging whether the state of the infants meets the legal requirement to prove the unique charges against his client. Police did originally caution Giesbrecht that they may charge her with murder or some related offence, but that never came to fruition.

Brodsky revealed in court Wednesday that his client's medical records show she had 10 abortions between 1994 and 2011. She gave birth to her two sons in 1997 and 2002.

The relevance of mentioning those abortions isn't clear at this time, but may emerge later once lawyers get into final arguments. There is no suggestion the remains in the storage locker are connected to those procedures. If Giesbrecht is, in fact, the mother of the six babies, then it appears she has been pregnant at least 18 times over her life.

Court has heard that officials were only able to determine the size of Baby No. 1. Medical examination showed him to be weighing 2.85 kilograms (6.2 pounds) and measuring 49 centimetres.

His tiny body was found stuffed inside a plastic storage container that also included an unusual list of other items — including three small toy cars, Scooby-Doo underwear, a perfume sample, a Pepto-Bismol bottle filled with coins, a plastic beaded necklace and a McDonald’s Happy Meal coupon. There were also personal papers belonging to Giesbrecht, including payroll stubs from 2004 and a St. John Ambulance training certificate that expired in 2007.

Giesbrecht was arrested after U-Haul employees made the grisly discovery while cleaning out her storage area; she was several months overdue on her locker rental payments, ignoring repeated warnings to square up.

Giesbrecht is also facing multiple fraud charges stemming from unrelated investigations. She is also charged with breaching a probation order by participating in gambling. A judge had barred her from any such conduct after she previously pleaded guilty to defrauding an elderly neighbour out of nearly $8,000 to feed what has been described in court as a major gambling addiction.

An earlier pre-sentence report painted Giesbrecht as a suburban soccer mom of two sons, married for 17 years, and a Siloam Mission volunteer. She had also been a homecare worker for DASCH, which supports people who have disabilities, and previously worked at the St. Amant Centre.

I have a different opinion.  I think the people reacting to Homolka are indirectly hurting her innocent children.  Im not sure what people want.  We all accept that she did an unforgivable thing.  She served her time.  I don't recall any incidents since her release.  The people going nuts are making it a story, not Homolka quietly going about her business.  I doubt I'd let my kids go to her house, but I wouldn't over-react about her living in my neighbourhood or her kids going to my kids' school.

I assume you don't have kids so you don't realize just how protective a parent can get at the thought of any threat to their children.

I believe the people in the video are making it a big story because they want her out of their town and far away and I can't say I blame them.  If you watch the video the parents have not accepted her for what she did and the "weaksauce" punishment that she was given.

I'm actually amazed that she has the guts to come back to Canada,  very gutsy move considering the massive amount of anger and resentment that she caused across the country.

I find it similar to the Vince Lee saga where I think he's living somewhere in Manitoba under a different name....  I wouldn't be able to sleep well at night if I knew my next door neighbor was capable of brutal murder.

Vince Li is not at all the same situation as Carla Homolka, and although he has killed someone he actually isn't capable of knowingly doing it.   He didn't know he was killing a person, in his mind it was some other thing he was killing, and he has to live with what happened in reality the rest of his life on top of the mental health issues he has.

Because of that one event, Vince Li, wherever he is living, will forever be monitored to be sure he is taking his meds.

What Hamolka did, she did with the full cognisant knowledge of it, and with her parole, she won't be monitored anywhere near as close as Vince Li, if at all.

So while I can understand your apprehension of living close to Vince Lee, the risk of him re-offending is lower then some other random crime or accident taking your life, yet I don't see you talking about barricading yourself indoors in bubble wrap to avoid traffic accidents and deadly viruses.

I get you are only comparing living in the same neighbourhood as these people, but making the comparison of Homolka to Vince Li does a big disservice to people who suffer from mental health issues.

One could argue that Homolka also had mental health issues.  The nature of the crimes would suggest that.  Im not arguing that people who commit such crimes should be given some drugs and sent on their way.  But she was also a victim as well as a perpetrator.  I think the odds of Homolka murdering anyone again is incredibly low.

If this was just about her, I probably wouldnt care.  But her children are no doubt being victimized as a result of this.  If Im the principal of the school, I would have accepted her children also.  And any parent who demands her children be expelled or they will remove their children, I would politely offer to help transfer the angry parent's kids out of the school

There is no doubt there are some issues there with what she did.  And I would surmise she was heavily influenced by Bernardo, but that still doesn't make the comparison to Vince Li at all valid.

Vince Li was found NCR (Not Criminally Responsible).  Homolka was not.

The reason is that in Vince's mind, he literally thought he was killing a monster or whatever vision he saw.  Had he known it was a person, he wouldn't have done it.

Homolka was criminally responsible, and regardless of what influence and issues she had to deal with, on some level she knew what she was doing was to another human being.

What Vince Li did was horrible, there is no doubt, and he needs to be under supervision to make sure it doesn't happen again, but the mental issues he suffers from is not at all the same as people who suffer from abuse / neglect / or whatever caused Homolka to do what she did.

Imagine the first job that you worked at.  Imagine all the people you met. The ones you hated.  The ones you liked.  Imagine your boss, your friends, conversations you had with them, things you did with them at work and after work.  Imagine that whole world.

Now imagine someone tells you today that all of that is a fabrication of your mind.  What you thought with 100% certainty was reality, isn't.  That is really what it is like for someone with Schizophrenia.

Somewhere in her mind, Homolka knew what she was doing.  Vince Li did not.

Oh I agree.  I had a serious argument with a friend as someone at his work mentioned Li was banking there and my friend said he would not serve him and in fact, if saw him on the street would run him down.  I scoffed and he insisted he was serious, which is obviously silly.  Li is a really difficult case for a lot of people because you need to find a balance between consequences and caring for the sick.

I recently saw an interesting episode of Dr Phil (yeah yeah) where parents brought their 10 year old daughter to him because they feared she would grow up to be a killer.  She killed animals, hurt her siblings, raged etc.  They felt it started after she suffered a head injury but doctors said there was no brain damage.  Phil sent her to a leading brain scan clinic and they showed the scans indicating over-activity in one part of the brain and a lack of oxygen in other parts.  The part of her brain dealing with empathy just wasnt working right.

How many killers have brain damage?

Anyway...Im not sure why, but the outcry makes me feel somewhat sorry for Homolka, but I think more so because Im thinking of the impact of this on her kids.

It boggles the mind that Homolka would ever decide to have children with her notoriety, doubly so for bringing them back to live in Canada to be stigmatized.  The last time the press tracked her down about 5 years ago she was living anonymously in the Caribbean, she should have stayed there for the good of all.

Homolka should have been imprisoned for life once it was proven by film that she lied about her involvement in the murders.  Why is it the government is obligated to keep up it's end of a plea-bargain when it was based on false information, there needs to be a reversal clause in such agreements.  The prosecutors were seriously incompetent if they needed her testimony to convict Paul Bernardo.

Thats the deal though.  We make a deal, we live by it.  They made the deal before they knew there was video (if I recall) and her testimony was very important.  After the video, it wasnt, ofcourse.  But the deal had been made.  I dont think she has been anything but a law abiding citizen since her release, though...?

However if I had a good life in the Caribbean, Im not sure I'd come back either!

DNA profile suggests Giesbrecht is mother of babies found in locker

Testimony today indicates the babies were likely alive when born.  But so badly decayed they cannot determine cause of death.  I suspect this woman is going to get away with murder or manslaughter (since she wasnt charged with either).  Horrific.
