Melt water runs across the Greenland ice sheet in 2007.

(CNN)For the first time on record, precipitation on Saturday at the summit of Greenland — roughly two miles above sea level — fell as rain and not snow.

Temperatures at the Greenland summit over the weekend rose above freezing for the third time in less than a decade. The warm air fueled an extreme rain event that dumped 7 billion tons of water on the ice sheet, enough to fill the Reflecting Pool at the National Mall in Washington, DC, nearly 250,000 times.
It was the heaviest rainfall on the ice sheet since record keeping began in 1950, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and the amount of ice mass lost on Sunday was seven times higher than normal for this time of year.
Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, said this is evidence Greenland is warming rapidly.

"What is going on is not simply a warm decade or two in a wandering climate pattern," Scambos told CNN. "This is unprecedented."

surprised that the Vancouver Sun has an article that accepts climate change. been denying forever.

good article actually, and it mentions a crazy proposal to accept multi millions and raise our pop. to one hundred million.

"Pete McMartin: Historic human tsunami likely in Canada's future

There will be climate refugees in the millions — if not the hundreds of millions — fleeing to countries where life is still tolerable."

If we persist in this mad, destructive pattern of consumption and unchecked population growth, sooner or  later Mother Earth will hit the reset button. The obscenely rich are gambling that they will be able to insulate themselves from this.

They won't. Money will only be good for kindling.

Realization will be slow.

I think the 1% now have the same attitudes towards the average person as did the nobility of the middle ages who, in their opinion, ruled with absolute power by divine right.  There was and still is an attitude that the masses are disposable and useful only so far as they serve a useful purpose.

as @the watcherpointed out, most city dwellers have no real cconnection to the planeet outside of what to wear  today, cause cold, hot, rainy.

most of us have forgotten we are dependent on the system, of the planet that is vastly bigger than we are.

poorly expressed, but I know you understand.

excellent.

limiting loss to only one half of Vancouver from sea level rise.

could be worse!

not that great a place anyways....

well done Conservatives!

@WildPath attempted sarcasm by me. Neither party is going to do anything. I doubt that the ndp would either. NDP in B.C. if theyve done anything, I have not heard of it. still mowing down last old growth on Van islamd though.

we'll sit on our hands till America tells us what to do.

Agreeing with you. Sad reaction because we will still do half measures which won't mean much other than an attempt to say there is a climate policy and they're doing something. Don't really understand how they can lambast Trudeau for ruining the future by spending during a pandemic and be completely blind to the biggest challenge to our future.

First flash flood warning in NYC history. The amount of water that was dumped on the eastern seaboard was crazy.

Globe Mail today

"Canadians have started to pay more for groceries as severe drought drives up prices for agricultural commodities, and experts say more price hikes are likely this fall.

At The Bon Ton Meat Market in Calgary, owner Greg Keller said the spike in retail beef prices over the last two months has been “unbelievable.”

“Some items have increased 10 to 15 per cent, some items have increased 20 per cent,” Keller said. “I’ve never seen such volatile markets, and I’ve been doing this a long time.”

but much more disturbing:

A summer of unprecedented heat has not been kind to the iconic ice in the Canadian Rockies. According to researchers, glaciers are melting at a rate never seen before.

“It’s horrific to see this almost unrecognizable from one year ago, two years ago, let alone 10-20 years ago,“ said Dr. John Pomeroy, a hydrologist and director of Global Water Futures.

“Glacial melt contributes water when irrigators need it most on the Prairies, and irrigators and people in the agricultural sector there depends on mountain water,” said Dr. Robert Sanford, chair of water and climate security at United National University Institute for water.

“It’s not impossible to imagine if we are losing ice at the rate that Peyto Glacier is losing ice this year, our rivers would run dry in August and September,” conservationist Dr. Harvey Locke said.

“This is grievously serious for the future of life on the Prairies. The world as we know it is being transformed as we watch.”

exxon is winning.

And yet we have a party pushing close to victory by promising to scrap the carbon tax in favour of a carbon savings plan because "everything is getting too expensive". I shudder to think how we will be looked upon in a few generations when it has been clear what is happening, obvious what can be done about it, and still we have halfhearted efforts even in so called "progressive" schools of thought.

Quote

Researchers who estimate how much of the world's coal, oil and natural gas reserves should be left unburned to slow the increase in climate-changing gases in the atmosphere say even more of these fossil fuels should be left in the ground.

The researchers, from University College London, say earlier estimates, published in 2015, had to be updated.

They now calculate that nearly 60 per cent of the world's oil and gas reserves and 90 per cent of the coal reserves need to stay in the ground by 2050 to meet climate goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Those limits would give the world a 50-50 chance of limiting global warming to 1.5 C (2.7 F) compared to pre-industrial times, according to their study published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

"We believe our new paper adds further weight to recent research that indicates the global oil and fossil methane gas production needs to peak now," Dan Welsby, lead author and an energy and environment researcher at the University College London, told a news conference Tuesday. "We found that global production needs decline at an average annual rate of around three per cent (through) 2050."

chances are oilco will create /become Wellcapco, and get paid to do it.

basically they are arsonists.

I thought we hated people that intentionally start fires.

how they have escaped ANY responsibilty to this point shows the great depth of their control.

Pretty smart actually. Initially avoid a big expense that doesn't bring in any money. Leave disaster and then get paid to clean it up later and claim to be bringing jobs to areas that need them. Governments can look like they are doing something for the environment and the economy.

The Age, Australian newspaper.

"News Corp’s climate change shame

From next month, News Corp Australia will end its long-standing editorial hostility towards carbon reduction policies and advocate that the world’s leading economies hit net zero emissions by 2050.

The Age’s Zoe Samios has written that columnists will not be muzzled but some will be expected to reframe their political arguments, though Sky News Australia boss Paul Whittaker said he was not aware of any plan to limit the views of dissenting conservative commentators. It’s a remarkable about-turn for a company that has for many years been a safe harbour for those peddling distortions of the truth about the warming of the planet. Somehow justified by a commitment to a ‘‘diversity of opinions’’, News Corp has supported, encouraged and amplified views that have repeatedly stymied any attempts by governments in Canberra to implement tough measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It has brought fringe opinion in and pumped it into the political mainstream, and it has ridiculed and taunted those, including in politics, who want stronger action. The rationale for the change is a well-kept secret, but News Corp insiders have indicated pressure from advertisers may have played a part. That theory played out this week, with the shift being welcomed by one of Australia’s largest advertisers, Coles, which has moved to position itself as the nation’s most sustainable supermarket."

"Another former News Corp executive who would only speak on the condition of anonymity suspected the decision was taken to remain relevant to metro and younger audience, saying “I doubt they will censor the extremities in their opinion writers, where deranged views will reign uninterrupted. It has little to do with anything other than spin and camouflage.”

Same thing is happening at Fox news. too late.  obviously momey related in some way.

the disgusting, repulsive Rupert Murdoch is the cause of much misery.

"it has brought fringe opinion in and pumped it into the political mainstream, and it has ridiculed and taunted those, including in politics, who want stronger action"

see that everywhere, including at this site.
