Being cynical and playing the odds looking at this historically, it seems yet again another example if you want to retain the services of a high end NHL player for any extended period of time you must provide a guaranteed 8 year contract knowing you are likely to receive for 3-5 years of quality service from them. That's just the way it is.

What’s crazy about the Weber contract is that there’s 3 years left so NASH thought he’d be playing at 40.

This was also one of the contracts that triggered the NHL to put in the 8 year max contract rule, as this was a 14 year contract, front loaded so that he only gets paid $1M a year with a $7.8M cap hit in each of the final 3 years.

The contract was designed to be bought out in those years or traded to a team like Phoenix.

TSN: Are the Maple Leafs now built for a Cup run?

First Round of Playoffs: Nope.

Please, please, please, please.

Not looking to defend the Leads at all here, hope they crash and burn again. Will say though that I don’t think any other team has as tough a road (if things play out as expected) to get the Cup. Tampa first round, Boston second round, one of Carolina, NJ, or NYR 3rd round, Colorado 4th round (if the predicted results occur). So if they do go on a run they can’t say they had an easy path (yet - we’ll see how it plays out).
