There's gotta be an American  kicker out there with upside.  But I'm not totally against giving Mourtada one more week.  I don't think his struggles are about accuracy.  Moreso adjusting to the angles.

Yeah that s the whole job.

Edit: ah I see you are using MOS's quote today.

I am not buying it. I don't give a **** if it looks great coming off his foot every time when he misses every time.

I would rather you helicopter that **** at a 90% rate.

OK, so we don’t trust Mourtada right now. But maybe should we trust O’Shea and his judgment?

But how much rope do you give a guy who hasn't kicked in a meaningful game before coming here? This isn't a school for training future players.  This is pro ball. This is supposed be results driven.

Yeah that's just it. He is an older American, you can't stpe in and hit field goals at an average rate GTFO.

Yeah, I get that it's his job and all, but considering the team is aware of his struggles, you'd think they'd have playcalling that helps line it up for him a bit more. 4/10 on the year is still atrocious, but realistically the team isn't giving him much help in that respect. The days of Money Medlock are behind us now.

As for trading for Whyte/Ward - I think it'd be a good idea short-term. However, this regime has consistently shown commitment to long-term success, I just can't see them airlifting someone in - and certainly not for a first-round draft pick. Even if that pick ends up being the last in the draft.

In regards to Moutarda.... it can only go up from here.   He can't possibly play any worse?

he could start choking on kick offs and XPTs too.

All his practicing and lack of game action he's really a kick off specialist. You can send him out for head on kicks as long as you have minimal weather issues. But other wise legs should place kick.

How would they do that exactly?

In my mind kicking field goals is % 90 mental. If he can't get his head straightened out and deal with the pressure in regular season games on a team that does nothing but win regardless of the kicking game  what is going to happen if the Grey Cup is on the line and he needs to kick the winner with seconds on the clock ? I know what the answer to that is right now.

I think its much more mechanical. Its like a pitchers delivery and release. Except you need basically flawless mechanics every time.

Mental issues can ruin any player in any sport. And staying consistent through long droughts of not kicking, even with in a game is tough. But that is never an issue with QBs who come in off the bench or who go a long stretch with out a possession/many passes.

Ive played with kicking, but I wasnt a real kick at any level. Ive done muay thai and kicking arts extensively and I can tell you ive seen peoples kicking mechanics fall apart over minor tightness and all kinds of minor technique issues.

Watching soo many of Mourtadas clips, he practices trying to make field goals while kicking off. The tee, the holder, his approach, empty fields, and always from right down the middle. Its like a kick off. Which is why he excels at kicking off soo much. In a kick off you have no timer, you can take as comfortable a stride as you like. Kicking a field goal, you have to cover a very precise distance, with an exact number of steps, in a small time window. All of that is stuff he didnt seem to practice.

His approach looks uncomfortable to me. And he looks un sure of every kick he launches. But never surprised when he misses. I really dont think he knows mechanically how to reliably kick and adjust to different spots on the field. He only seems comfortable with the xpt, which is right down the middle.

It isnt really a surprise, he's only kicked a little bit in the IFL as a pro, didnt have a full college career, and what he had ended a very long time ago. He's old, lacks experience, and has tremendous leg strength. Weaker leg guys arent trying to hit 60 yard fgs every day, they are trying to figure out how to hit from every angle, and mastering their mechanics.

Right. Which is a long way of saying, he's not a CFL caliber kicker. Pro kicking is pretty black and white - can you hit 75 - 80% of field goals in actual games? If not, time to find someone else. Bad kicking will cost us a game. Hopefully not the Western final.

Yeah at this point he isnt. And the hope of him becoming elite at this point is very low considering his age. With his low experience he could improve considerably in a medium period of time, but its been a month and a half and hes getting worse. Even if he improves dramatically Idk if he could be more than a westwood quality kicker.

All kickers struggle at some point, like medlock in the NFL. But its never consistent or long lasting. Medlock struggled in his first pre season game, then was lights out in the next 2. He played the first 10 games in the regular season. In the first 7 of those he didnt miss a fg, and went 5/5 in the 7th game. In the last 3 he went a combined 0/3 including 1 blocked kick that wasnt on him in week 8. After the 10th game his time was over.

Mourtada has gone 0/3, 3/3, 1/4 with a missed convert. He was signed august 30th so its been a month and a half on the nose. I think at worst the bye week in week 13 has to be the panic button. The trade dead line falls in that week. Thatd leave a month plus a week till the GC. Any guys kicking around trying to get NFL deals should have a pretty clear picture of if they will get a deal or not.

Bauming said that Sergio castillo has been holding out for an NFL deal too. So thats 3 seasoned cfl vets who can kick at a high level. Ones gotta say yes I would think.

This is what bothers me the most. It's completely illogical that he's even here, in a year that we're chasing another cup. How is this better than taking a guy off the cfl practice roster, or another teams pr?

It's like the CFL has imposed some sort of shadow ban on us. No, sorry, Bombers, you've had your rookie and your vet kickers. From here on out, you only get random kickers from the arena or spring league. Deal with it.

Edmonton apparently has a kicker on their PR who can't play because of Sean Whyte. So, exactly...
