Round 1 - Game 1 : @ Edmonton

Recommended Posts

Hopefully they watched a bunch of Habs-Oilers tape. The Canadiens did pretty well against Edmonton and found a way to get under McDavid’s skin. Hit him at every turn, finish all your checks, find a dedicated “pest” to get in his grill between and after the whistles. And hope the refs don’t call you every time you encroach the 5 yard bubble like he’s a punt returner.

Totally agree with this and it’s something the Jets haven’t done.  I understand hitting McDavid isn’t easy, but we passed up so many opportunities in prior games.  Got to be physical and try to fluster him a bit.

so.... how do the jets stop mcdavid?

Just an honest attempt to slow him down would be a nice start.  Make some sound personnel decisions.  Don't watch him like fans do and let him skate circles, play the body.

You can't stop the guy, but Jets can do far better at trying that's for sure.

As much as McDavid dominated us this season, Tippet too did quite a number on Maurice.

Yeah and watch us throw 81/55/26 out there against him again.  Copp and Appleton are the only 2 FWs who come to mind who can even try that pest roll...

By our win/lost record this year against them, this would be a fair statement about Tippet and crew outcoaching Maurice and crew.

But my sour grapes statement would be sure does give you an advantage off the git go when you have the best player on the planet at your disposal factoring in at almost 60% of their scoring. He makes everyone around him better.

Hopefully Maurice and team will have a game plan (other than Helle standing on his head) executed perfectly by the players that Tippet will have no answer for other than gassing McDavid.

Whose our Brad Marchand of the series?

Either the Oilers will sweep us away quickly or we take them in 6 or 7.

The one thing that gives me hope is that the Oilers really ARE all McDavid. He was in on 57.4% of the Oilers’ total goals, which is an all-time record. Contain him and the Oilers don’t offer much of anything else as a threat.  Could he possibly be double-teamed in a 5 man defensive set, as crazy as that concept is in hockey?

As for the Jets’ Marchand (or Tkachuk) I don’t know if we really have that kind of player. Maybe Lowry, maybe Copp, but Perrault seems like he could adapt his game to any role and is “small man” enough to get away with stuff that a bigger played might get called for.

Eeek.

Our depth when healthy is thin and now with Ehlers and Dubois no-go's, we probably should be looking for an ugly 2-1 win where the comments the day after would read how did the Oilers not win this game.

Go Jets Go.
