Between Vegas,Philly,if Trotz wants a team with talent then it's Winnipeg. Top 10 goalie, tons of offensive fire power, just need Barry's expertise on defense. I honestly believe the Jets are a good coach away from being consistently dangerous for a few years.

I like how you think. :)

If that is the case, then it doesn't say much about a significant number of the Jets' players

If they become a contender under Trotz, then it will be clear that many of them have underperformed in 2021 - 2022

Sources tell The Athletic that Scott Arniel is a near-lock to be part of Winnipeg’s next coaching staff, likely in the role of associate coach.

Arniel has worked for the Washington Capitals as an assistant coach for the past four seasons. Prior to that, he worked under Alain Vigneault in New York, where the Rangers made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014. He was also the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets for two seasons in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Notably, Arniel has already been hired by True North Sports + Entertainment — twice. He worked as an assistant coach for the Moose for two seasons in 2000-01 and 2001-02, before getting hired as an assistant coach for the Buffalo Sabres. True North hired him again in 2006, this time as Manitoba’s head coach. The Moose then made the playoffs for four straight seasons, losing to Hershey in the 2009 Calder Cup Final.

Any announcement on Arniel’s hiring will likely be held until the Jets hire their head coach. A head coach typically hires their own assistants and, while the Jets retain Wade Flaherty’s services to work with Connor Hellebuyck, the new bench boss will likely be heavily involved in rounding out the staff.

To that end, the Jets remain all-in on Barry Trotz as their ideal head coach. Trotz has a number of suitors — Vegas, Dallas, Detroit and Philadelphia have all reached out — and is essentially the top free agent on the market. Sources close to him have indicated that he’ll take his time to assess what’s best for him and his family.

I wonder if Vegas offers so much money that Trotz’s decision falls between becoming the highest paid coach in the NHL (or close to it) and coming home to a city and province that already loves him. There are pros and cons to all suitors — Vegas has wealth but is developing a reputation for firing people at the whims of ownership, Detroit has Steve Yzerman and brilliant youth but is still rebuilding, etc. — so Trotz’s decision will ultimately come down to where his values sit at this stage of his career. It is certainly possible the Jets find a way to highlight their loyalty and a path to the front office, winning the day despite a hugely disappointing season, but it’s no guarantee.

If the Jets do succeed in landing Trotz, Arniel becomes a leading candidate for the role of his No. 2 coach. Trotz previously worked with Lane Lambert in that role for three franchises over the course of 11 consecutive seasons but with Lambert taking over in Long Island, an apprenticeship role awaits wherever Trotz is hired.

In a perfect world, this scenario leads Winnipeg to a long-term succession plan.

One of the factors influencing Trotz’s decision is a path into management. If Winnipeg is prepared to bring him into meetings during his coaching tenure, progressively assigning more responsibility where it is due in an attempt to groom him for a front office job, then presumably one of his tasks as coach would be to train his replacement. It’s possible that one of the aspects of working in Winnipeg that appeals to Arniel is a potential path to a head coaching job — if not now, then when Trotz moves up and opens up the opportunity. Otherwise, why leave Washington? The Capitals’ biggest stars may be past their peaks but Washington remains very good; the team won the Cup under Trotz in 2018 and hasn’t missed the playoffs in four seasons since.

It’s not often wise to bet on every single “ifs” and “and” working out in an organization’s favour but one can easily understand the appeal of such a plan for the Jets. Nail the combination and Winnipeg can form a succession plan that lasts several years. Better yet, if you’re True North, you can point to your organizational loyalty and the extremely long tenures of both Kevin Cheveldayoff and Paul Maurice. Why work for Vegas, who fired Pete DeBoer and Gerard Gallant in rapid succession, when you arrange long-term stability and security with the Jets?

Loyalty is clearly a double-edged sword for the Jets. That Arniel — a former Winnipeg player the organization has already hired two times — is a near-lock to join their next staff speaks to a culture of choosing what is familiar. Choosing what is familiar is not the hallmark of winning organizations or championship teams and choosing familiarity for its own sake seems destined to fail.

Pair that same familiarity with a coach who can earn players’ respect, solve hockey problems, address whatever behind the scenes issues still afflict the Jets and generate results? Suddenly you can start to see a way through the growing pains.

Arniel on his own won’t move that needle.

But the Jets remain all-in on Trotz. A staff that includes them both would go quite a bit further toward creating the accountable, team-first, winning culture that Winnipeg so clearly needs.

Getting Arniel/Vigneault vibes now 🤔

I'm getting trotz arniel vibes as trotz assistant lambert is head coach of the islanders now.

Arniel is a good pk coach.

Also, anybody will be better than the last couple years of Maurice and Lowry. Getting huddy away from the D = massive improvements regardless of who the coach is. Also assistants run what the head coach says too
