Covid-19

"Among anti-herders, it is popular to compare the current number of Covid-19 deaths by country and as a proportion of the population. Such comparisons are misleading, as they ignore the existence of herd immunity. A country much closer to herd immunity will ultimately do better even if their current death count is somewhat higher. The key statistic is instead the number of deaths per infected. Those data are still elusive, but comparisons and strategies should not be based on misleading data just because the relevant data are unavailable.

While it is not perfect, Sweden has come closest to an age-based strategy by keeping elementary schools, stores and restaurants open, while older people are encouraged to stay at home. Stockholm may become the first place to reach herd immunity, which will protect high-risk groups better than anything else until there is a cure or vaccine."

We.  Still.  Don't.  Know.  If.  Herd.  Immunity.  Works.  With.  COVID-19!

Infecting 75% of your population to test a hypothesis on a new lethal strain of virus is madness.

The potential level of oops is unfathomable.

CFL bankruptcy is a small price to pay if we can even save one life...

I am all for replaying the entire 2019 CFL broadcast schedule in lieu of a fresh one.

If it didn't, wouldn't people be getting re-infected? Serious question. Of all the people that have had it and recovered, I haven't heard of any of them catching it repeatedly. Have you? There was one woman in Japan that thought she might have caught it twice but they're now skeptical, thinking she likely just never got over the first infection adequately.

Sweden is testing conservatives’ preferred coronavirus response — and it’s not going well

(
Written by Daily Kos May 7, 2020
Many conservatives are in love with the idea of Sweden’s approach—no lockdown. They don’t take into consideration that half of Swedes live alone, or that they have a top-notch universal healthcare system. They just think “no lockdown” is a better response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

If nothing else, Sweden’s alternative response to the virus was … a good control group. And what we’re learning now is that failing to shut down hasn’t just led to more deaths, but—surprise surprise!—it also didn’t prevent its economy from tanking. In fact, Sweden is poised for more economic pain than its neighbors.

There is an email circulating that purports to be from a Japanese professor of medicine who was alleged to be associated with the Wuhan Virus Institute and he is quoted as saying that the Coronavirus was absolutely created and released. Snopes has identified this as fake, although Dr, Honjo is a Nobel recipient. Another racist attack by the Trumpsters.

Discredited Doctor and Sham ‘Science’ are the Stars of Viral Coronavirus Documentary ‘Plandemic’
CORONAVIRUS GRIFTERS
Dr. Judy Mikovits is portrayed as a science genius in a conspiracy film about the coronavirus—but her own research history is dubious and the video is full of bizarre claims.

Millions of Americans have been exposed to “Plandemic,” a 22-minute conspiracy theory documentary about the coronavirus that racked up millions of views on Facebook and YouTube before it was banned from both sites.

In the video, controversial scientist Dr. Judy Mikovits, a close associate of anti-vaccine activists, weaves an elaborate tale alleging a government conspiracy to create the coronavirus, with Anthony Fauci as a kind of murderous puppetmaster behind it all. Along the way, she claims that masks “activate” the virus, and that she was imprisoned as part of a cover-up.

China Study Finds 5% to 15% of Covid-19 Cases Are Reactivated

The rate of reactivation in China varied among different places, with some regions showing less than 1% of such cases among recovered patients, Wang Guiqiang, director of department of infection at the Peking University First Hospital. Wang disclosed the figures during a press conference held by China’s National Health Commission on Thursday.

Wang said most of the patients who have tested positive again have yet to show any symptoms, and it needs more work to find out the reason for the reactivation.

God do all you right wing nutters have meetings to get your talking points straight? Cause I swear it's always the exact same arguments from every one of you.

Sweden is in no way shape or form an example that the USA could ever follow. Sweden is a small socialist country. They have a robust social safety net and well funded health care system... and they are still have issues no matter how much anyone wants to pretend they aren't.  The USA meanwhile has pay to play Healthcare and sweet **** all for a social safety net. If they just let er buck with this virus it would be devastating to them because such a large portion of their population lacks access to Healthcare to start with. In the States someone could go bankrupt having to go to the hospital as easily as they could "suffering" through a lockdown.

It is high time people stop looking at things like this in terms of it just being about covid-19. All cover has done is peel back the layers and expose which countries have shitty governments and systems in place.

It's why I don't like the "but unemployment will kill more people!!1!" Nonsense that gets tossed around. It's up to governments to support their people through this making the conclusions null and void unless the government does nothing. In which case it isn't the virus that is the problem,  it's uncaring government content to get rich off the plebs and if they die so be it, it was so a bunch of already rich people could get just a tiny bit richer.

That is the real issue being exposed here. As a nation we can afford to take measures to slow the spread of this virus AND support people financially through it. It's not an either or choice. As I have said for ever, we aren't trying to stop this thing, only slow it down enough so that people don't have to die unnecessarily because too many people got sick at once. Herd immunity isn't something that only happens if everyone gets infected at once, it will happen as more people are exposed, which will naturally happen with a slow, phased re-opening of things. We take our time getting back to normal, we can care for the ones who get sick and still get that herd immunity (if it's something that lasts. These things mutate fast enough a new strain could show up in a few years that we don't have the resistance to.

^^ It would seem to be the logical path to take for many, many countries, and that’s why most countries chose that way.

This is real and frightening in so many ways and yet some people seem to want to push other, illogical paths to treat all countries the same way.

It just can’t be done.

There are loonies out there and I’m not talking currency. They’ll sift through dozens of articles to try and find some that make sense to them. Them, and their counterparts.

Oh, and remember, YouTube may be fun, but it’s not always a good reference site.

Yeah what is that in reference to anyway? Is he talking about the lunatics who think immunity passports should be a thing? Cause that won't happen.

If Americans keep getting shot at McDonald's and Dollar Tree's over asking people to follow guidelines, armed checkpoints might actually save lives.  The so-called "freedom" that America's Right has created might only be mitigated by police state tactics.  The irony...

Yep, the people who scream the loudest about needing guns to protect from a tyrannical government are quite happy with the Republicans acting all authoritarian.

No what this comes down to is small weak individuals who need to feel powerful by having a gun.

Its so crazy to think its the Republicans that want all this control by the President over the people and even over Congress. And when the alt right scream hypocrite, just wait til their is a Democrat in the White House or control of Congress and they do half of what this GOP has done.  Congress especially, have sold out the constitution.
