An "imbalanced" group of experts and China's resistance to co-operate means the World Health Organization's new panel is unlikely to determine whether the origin of COVID-19 can be found in nature or traced to a lab leak, some experts suggest.

The WHO announced last week it had formed a new advisory group to to look into the origins of emerging and re-emerging pathogens of epidemic and pandemic potential, including COVID-19.

Called the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO), the 26-member proposed panel includes four members who took part in a WHO-led team that spent four weeks in and around Wuhan earlier this year with Chinese scientists.

Alina Chan, a Canadian molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, said she doesn't have much faith in it.

"Based on the outcomes of the China-WHO joint study and the persistent lack of access to data and information in China, I'm not confident that the current list of SAGO members will make any headway into the origin of COVID-19," Chan, who also launched an open-source website to track COVID-19's genetic evolution, told CBC News in an email.

She was one of 18 scientists who signed a letter in May that was published in Science. It criticized the original panel's report about the origin of COVID-19 for not giving proper consideration to the lab-leak theory.

In an email to CBC News, Chan questioned the composition of the new panel, suggesting that some of the members from the original group who are on this new panel may carry biases.

She said she was disappointed that WHO did not take the opportunity to start SAGO on a clean slate and to pick experts who are as "uncontroversial as possible."

"Most of the international experts convened on the highly criticized initial joint study with China are back on SAGO," Chan said in an email to CBC News, "It will now be difficult to convince people that the new SAGO will be much different from the original joint study group.

Just crazy to think it's been nearly two years since the first detection of COVID-19 in China and we still don't know its actual origin.

Ask Karen and Todd on the internet, they'll tell you. They've done some research.

You don't even have to leave MBB to find someone who will tell you it was made in a Chinese lab with help from National Virology Lab.

Of course, they'll also say that Covid is fake.

And, it's not as deadly as they say.

And a whole bunch of obviously nutso inconsistent, incoherent ramblings.

I'm going to believe that there is a reason China won't cooperate.  They are guilty of something here... cover up is possible. Perhaps accidentally on purpose

The Chinese government will only cooperate with the rest of the world if it benefits Chinese government. So who knows .Or maybe I should say WHO doesn't know.

All that damn background noise makes it really tough to sort out reality.  As near as I can tell from legit sources they are %90 that it cropped up by regular means. But there are lingering doubts and questions so the WHO wants to check it out. Which only makes sense. The trouble is it's fodder for the Covidiots and nutbars.  So basicly they are saying, " it doesn't exist , it's all a lie .........But  it came from a Chinese lab. "  If they are going to be nuts they should at least be consistent.

I remember seeing something about the possibility that it was detected in Italian sewage samples  from early 2019.  Something of note with that was that it was in an area of Italy where many Chinese people (from the Wuhan province) have gone for work in factories.

I'll see if I can dig up the article where I read that, it was about a year ago.

Far-right website claims that Christians should see dying from COVID as ‘a good thing’

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the MAGA movement and far-right Christian fundamentalists have downplayed its severity — inspiring critics to slam MAGA as a suicidal "death cult." Christian fundamentalist Joy Pullmann, in a shocking op-ed published by the far-right website The Federalist on the day of Gen. Colin Powell's death, argues that Christians should welcome death from COVID-19, like any other cause of death, as "a good thing." And she attacks the "pagan assumptions" of those who argue in favor of widespread vaccination.

"For Christians, death is good," Pullmann writes. "Yes, death is also an evil — its existence is a result of sin. But thanks be to God, Jesus Christ has redeemed even death. In his resurrection, Christ has transformed death into a portal to eternal life for Christians…. The Christian faith makes it very clear that death, while sad to those left behind and a tragic consequence of human sin, is now good for all who believe in Christ."

Of course, not all Christians share Pullmann's view that the deaths of the COVID-19 pandemic — which has killed more than 4.9 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore — are "a good thing." Countless Catholic and Mainline Protestant churches have tried to keep their members alive by encouraging vaccination, protective face masks and social distancing. And pastors in the African Methodist Episcopal Church have gone out of their way to help people in the Black community find COVID-19 vaccines.

But as Pullmann sees it, churches that have encouraged social distancing and tried to prevent their members from dying from COVID-19 have behaved sinfully.

Pullmann writes, "To forsake assembling for worship also breaks the Third Commandment, 'Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy'…. It is time for Christians individually and corporately to repent for the way we and our institutions responded to the COVID-19 outbreak. Our refusal to preach and obey the clear teachings of the Bible amid the world's panic have betrayed Our Lord. Thanks be to God, there's a way out for us."

Pullmann argues, "Our Christian heritage also rejects the avoidance of death at any cost by venerating the millions of martyrs we honor precisely for choosing to confess Christ despite the indescribable costs to them of comfort, health and life itself."

Nothing about the unmasked PC MLA's here? For those unfamiliar, 3 PC MLA's were caught in pictures at a gala unmasked (posted to one of their own social media accounts😄), one of them our health minister, Audrey Gordon. The same Audrey Gordon that was caught up in the Springs graduation controversy last spring and had the worst denial "I haven't seen any proof that I was there". Her defense this time was that the only removed the mask for the picture. Other pictures, including ones posted by another MLA, show she was unmasked throughout the gala.

Unfortunately the anti-vax, anti-restrictions groups have used this from everything to prove Covid isn't real and the leaders know about it to awareness that masks are useless and restrictions are an attempt to control them.

You can't win with those types. If something bad happens, it's Gods will....if they don't want to listen to the Government it's because you can't be of this world and a Christian. If they WANT to follow the Government it's because God picks the leaders. If the community around them is upset with them it's because they are fighting against an evil society etc etc etc. I was never a far-right christian. But I was a christian at one point in time and I know all to well how they will use the Bible to justify any position they take.
