Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman is calling on the province to shutter businesses that consistently defy Manitoba’s COVID-19 mandates.

"Businesses that repeatedly (and) intentionally violate provincial public health orders should be closed," he posted on Twitter Tuesday, adding he wrote to Audrey Gordon, Manitoba’s health minister, about the matter.

"Not partial closures," he told reporters Wednesday. "Close them and shut them down."

He said residents have expressed concern and outrage at organizations that frequently disobey pandemic laws, like checking proof of vaccination and enforcing indoor mask use.

Closing unco-operative businesses would respect the law-abiding ones, Bowman said.

Public Health is getting tougher on the scofflaws:

Ten Manitoba businesses accused of breaking provincial public health orders were fined a total of more than $72,000 last week.

Enforcement officers handed out 16 fines to five businesses in Winnipeg, three in Winkler and two in Steinbach for failing to follow public health orders between Sept. 20 and 26.

Monstrosity Burger in Winnipeg, which has already been ordered to shut down its indoor dining, received four $5,000 fines. The anti-mask, anti-vaccine business advertised a "walk for freedom" on Saturday and encouraged patrons to pre-order food and eat on the boulevard outside of the strip mall that houses the restaurant.

Other businesses fined included Chaise Cafe and Lounge, two MORFIT Training Centre locations and Bong Traders Paraphernalia Co. In Winkler, Twisters, Del Rios and the Iceburg Drive-In restaurants were fined. In Steinbach, Retro Chique and a Great Canadian Oil Change location were fined.

That makes $60k in fines for the Monsters on Corydon in the past month.

Anyone expecting the (literal) diehard anti-vaxxers to change their minds will be disappointed. They are so invested in their beliefs that contracting COVID or even dying is unlikely to move them. There are two kinds of donkeys- those you can lead with a carrot and those you must drive with a stick.

And those that you can't drive with a stick and aren't worth the feed you put in them so you just .....never  mind I don't go there.

Merck & Co. said Friday that its experimental COVID-19 pill reduced hospitalizations and deaths by half in people recently infected with the coronavirus and that it would soon ask health officials in the U.S. and around the world to authorize its use.

If cleared, Merck's drug would be the first pill shown to treat COVID-19, a potentially major advance in efforts to fight the pandemic. All COVID-19 therapies now authorized in the U.S. require an IV or injection.

Merck and its partner, Ridgeback Biotherapeutics, said early results showed patients who received the drug, called molnupiravir, within five days of COVID-19 symptoms had about half the rate of hospitalization and death as patients who received a dummy pill. The study tracked 775 adults with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 who were considered higher risk for severe disease because of health problems such as obesity, diabetes or heart disease.

Once again, Manitoba leading the way re: COVID. **** the libertarian assholes....**** around and find out. You want to avoid lockdowns, then get the shot. It's one or the other. ******* assholes.

I am shocked at how well we've done the last few months of the pandemic. I think we were right up there with Alberta and Sask on mismanaging the pandemic for 3/4 of the pandemic, but we've turned the corner. We might have even managed worse than them initially since we consistently had a lag on waves, but did nothing proactive to stop it until this 4th wave. And what do you know, it seems to have made a big difference so far. I think it helps that Manitoba has generally a larger percentage of the population that has progressive ideals. I haven't kept tabs on regional differences in other provinces, but Manitoba is a model statistically for why vaccinations work (thanks to Southern region for proving this).

They should publish the vaxed/non-vaxed cases as a proportion of total respective population to really drive home how well the vaccines are working.

The only problem with this is the number would be skewed quite a bit. Vaxxed may seem high because they have less restrictions, but most importantly, will actually get tested if they have symptoms. Unvaxxed are less likely to get tested and many get their first Covid tests when admitted to ICU. On top of this, a lot more people are vaccinated than unvaccinated. I'm assuming many of the vaccinated people getting Covid are in high risk situations like nursing homes.

Normal people may be able to understand this and make sense of seeing how many cases are vaccinated, but remember, we're mostly talking about the dumbest of our population. Any evidence of vaccinated people contracting Covid adds to their delusions that vaccinations don't work and aren't worth the risks, whatever nonsense risks they imagine.

U.S. Hits 700,000 COVID Deaths Despite Free, Widely Available Vaccine

In yet another grim milestone, the United States has passed 700,000 deaths from COVID-19 despite the widespread availability of safe and effective vaccines. According to The New York Times, the recent wave of deaths is primarily attributed to the Delta variant—add that to those who refuse to get vaccinated and it’s a recipe for disaster. The CDC reports that unvaccinated people have a 10x greater risk of dying from the virus than vaccinated people. Howard Markel, a medical historian at the University of Michigan, calls the deaths after the vaccines’ availability to the public “absolutely needless.” Another defining characteristic of the recent wave of deaths is that the victims are younger, with those under 55 facing their highest death rate since the pandemic began.

(NOT GOOD NEWS)

Preliminary research finds that even mild cases of COVID-19 leave a mark on the brain

by Jessica Bernard, Texas A&M University

With more than 18 months of the pandemic in the rearview mirror, researchers have been steadily gathering new and important insights into the effects of COVID-19 on the body and brain. These findings are raising concerns about the long-term impacts that the coronavirus might have on biological processes such as aging.

As a cognitive neuroscientist, my past research has focused on understanding how normal brain changes related to aging affect people's ability to think and move – particularly in middle age and beyond. But as more evidence came in showing that COVID-19 could affect the body and brain for months or longer following infection, my research team became interested in exploring how it might also impact the natural process of aging.
In August 2021, a preliminary but large-scale study investigating brain changes in people who had experienced COVID-19 drew a great deal of attention within the neuroscience community.

In that study, researchers relied on an existing database called the UK Biobank, which contains brain imaging data from over 45,000 people in the U.K. going back to 2014. This means – crucially – that there was baseline data and brain imaging of all of those people from before the pandemic.

The research team analyzed the brain imaging data and then brought back those who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 for additional brain scans. They compared people who had experienced COVID-19 to participants who had not, carefully matching the groups based on age, sex, baseline test date and study location, as well as common risk factors for disease, such as health variables and socioeconomic status.

The team found marked differences in gray matter – which is made up of the cell bodies of neurons that process information in the brain – between those who had been infected with COVID-19 and those who had not. Specifically, the thickness of the gray matter tissue in brain regions known as the frontal and temporal lobes was reduced in the COVID-19 group, differing from the typical patterns seen in the group that hadn't experienced COVID-19.

In the general population, it is normal to see some change in gray matter volume or thickness over time as people age, but the changes were larger than normal in those who had been infected with COVID-19.

Interestingly, when the researchers separated the individuals who had severe enough illness to require hospitalization, the results were the same as for those who had experienced milder COVID-19. That is, people who had been infected with COVID-19 showed a loss of brain volume even when the disease was not severe enough to require hospitalization.

Finally, researchers also investigated changes in performance on cognitive tasks and found that those who had contracted COVID-19 were slower in processing information, relative to those who had not.

While we have to be careful interpreting these findings as they await formal peer review, the large sample, pre- and post-illness data in the same people and careful matching with people who had not had COVID-19 have made this preliminary work particularly valuable.

In the NHL news today, Edmonton Oiler Nate Archibald has been sidelined indefinitely with myocarditis- an inflammation of his heart muscle and potentially fatal. He refused to be vaccinated and contracted COVID some time in the last 60 days but was asymptomatic but potentially infectious. Stupidity has its price, and in this case, it will be millions for Archibald and the loss of a valuable player for his team.

Then there's Duncan Keith of the Oilers who on Friday was whining that his rights were violated by the NHL's mandatory vaccination rules. This was before Nate Archibald's news of myocarditis. I wonder what he thinks now?

I'm worried that we see another surge after Thanksgiving like last year.

On the personal/selfish note, I'd just like to be able to go to the gym, eat out, see a movie in a theatre over the winter.

It's not selfish at all. It's why we all try to follow the good Dr's rules. So we can do those things and keep as many people healthy as we can.

If you guys can keep it ~100 daily cases through the winter, you're golden. Come spring/summer, hopefully vaxx rates will be high enough that this is the last of it...

Previous pandemics were not stopped by herd immunity. Either so many died that people were so sparsely situated as to not have contact with each other (like the Black Death that killed a third of Europeans) or vaccination.

I'm more than a little worried that Shelly Glover will be our next premier at the end of the month. She's already opposed vaccine mandates and I'm betting would be pretty soft on restrictions as well. Unfortunately only card carrying PCs will be the ones allowed to elect the next premier.

Already the anti-vax nutjobs have attempted to buy PC memberships on mass to get Ken Lee in power. I'm sure all their support and the support of PC card carrying bible belt will go behind Glover now. That would be bad news if we want to avoid a Kenney/Moe response to Covid.
