People have lost jobs and businesses. People have been unable to see dying or seriously ill loved ones who are in hospitals, people haven't been allowed to attend their place of worship, people haven't given up many things that made up their day to day lives and they did it for the greater good, to help save lives and flatten the curve because this is what the government, public health officials and the media preached and heck for the mot part did it willingly. Then other people and many of the same government officials hold rallies for what is without question a good cause but at the same time, people weren't observing social distancing not were all wearing masks and they're told that this was ok because it was for good? So Noeller, The Unknown Poster, 17to85, you don't see why people are upset or disillusioned?

I think you're drawing a false equivalency.  And again, if the government would prefer large gatherings not take place (as I am sure they do), then would you prefer the move to shut them down?  I guarantee no government agency or police force (here) would look at the pros and cons and decide thats the smart move.

Ive been firm that I believe large gatherings are not wise.  But just as firm that these protests are a force of nature borne out of hundreds of years of anger and frustration, triggered, finally by events both small & large.  Its organic and its historic.  So do I feel empathy for people hurt by the restrictions?  Yes.  My family has been hurt by the restrictions.  I feel worse for people of colour and understand more their need and desire to do this.

And quite frankly, if you disagree with them your issue isnt with them.  How many cities around North America are open?  Beaches packed.  Vacation destinations open.  Casinos etc.  Are they more deserving of gatherings than the protests?

Haha I’m just messing with you TUP - for J5’s reading pleasure...  you’re right - covid is on the rise and death is sure to follow - at least in Florida where they didn’t have a good cause..,

im going to go spend my stock market dollars with my Trump buddies now because I only care about money and not people...  trying to remember what poster insulted me like that at the start of covid - his name slips my mind...

At least you're consistent.

Thank you for this, its well put.

I agree no government or police force here would move to shut them down, nor do I think it would have been wise. I believe you stated it would have caused more issues (correct me if that wasn't you) and I agree.

It’s a great point except there are two issues

- vacation destinations, most beaches and casinos are not actually open (especially in this fashion so it’s comparing apples to oranges)

- the question is not whether the protests should be allowed or not, its whether this creates a second covid wave

There is actually no one arguing that the cops should or could have shut the protests down

Missed the news about Vegas.  Missed the video of parties in Osarks. Missed pictures of packed beaches.   Whooose.

I did. Others probably did as well.   I think in rare circumstances there are issues you risk your health for.  The people using hindsight to try and say nothing should have closed are making an argument that doesn’t fit that description.    We shall see if protests spike covid.  We would assume they would, without having the data.  As the thread I posted showing increase in areas that “re-opened”.

We're very open here in Manitoba.  Work, restaurants, hair salons.  So im not sure where you think we're still under a lockdown.  We can disagree on this but no one was stopping that protest.  Period.  And trying, either directly through police action or indirectly through fining would do nothing but inflame the issue.  What activity is it you want to do that you feel you cant but are upset protesters can protest?

Fall U Sports was cancelled today all across Canada. Next will be all fall & winter high school, community sports, hockey, junior football. Can't go to a movie or gym. Can't get together with family. Kids are forced to learn at home in front of a laptop. A lot are struggling. Let's sacrifice their education while we're at it because we sacrificed everything else. After all, it's their fault if they can't learn. Here In AB, schools won't open until at least September.  Can't have weddings or funerals over 50. If I go to Manitoba, I have to self quarantine for 2 weeks.  Really? Yet, demonstrators  please don't yell, sing or shout. Don't forget to social distance. You must be tested. And if you demonstrated, it's okay to go ahead yell, sing & not social distance. And very few will get tested.

I really hope people don't contract the virus from the protests. I personally believe this BLM movement is the biggest, most important social movement of my lifetime and NEEDS to be heard. It's just really really unfortunate it had to happen during a pandemic.

1. We all understand your frustration.

2. There really wasn’t any way for government or law enforcement to effectively and peacefully stop the protests.

3. There was really no way for Dr. Roussin to say the protests were a bad idea and shouldn’t have happened.  Perception is 9/10s of reality, and some would have perceived such comments as racist.

People have seen the virus for what it's worth. Coming on in February & March at the height of the flu season. We didn't get overrun. Our HC system survived. People have moved on. BLM is the next big news cycle. Now, it's time for governments to move on as well.

but it makes sense, usually people are wage slaves and don't have time to protest... however with a bunch of people without that restriction on their time, boom. protests.

That’s happening. Kids are back in school here, borders are loosening up, restaurants are opening, etc.

**** off, a HUGE plank in his platform was "red tape reduction" AKA **** regulations. Nothing to do with covid, just something he was always going to do.

Well then why did he use covid as the reason then... just say I’m cutting environmental regs and not suspending them due to covid contagion - that’s my f*cking point

why did his minister say it’s a great time to build pipeline because people can’t gather to protest

Covid could be man made and leaked from a Chinese lab

Those crazy conspiracists are at it again...  this time is MI6 and a senior Norwegian virologist lying to us

Do it faster. Lift all restrictions for everything. No more self isolation if you travel. No social distancing in schools or anywhere else anymore. Get rid of the 50% capacity in bars & restaurants. Let pro sports & the CFL play. The US-Canada border is still closed. Open it up. If I go to Winnipeg, I immediately have to self isolate for 14 days. Why? Get rid of it. Don't give me that excuse that you don't want the virus in your province so keep the provincial border effectively closed by forcing visitors from other provinces to stay in a hotel room for 2 weeks.  Can't have it both ways. If 15-20,000 people are allowed to demonstrate everyday it's obviously okay for them to go back to where they live infecting others along the way.  That seems to be a socially acceptable risk now. Nope, governments at all levels lost me now & I was one of the biggest supporters of self isolation & social distancing to flatten the curve. Not anymore. Now, I believe it's a big scam. I know millions everywhere are asking the same thing. Just WTH is going on???

Sorry TUP. Not here to argue with you or anyone. Just saying how I feel. Two weeks ago any large gathering would have been described here as Covidiots & severely chastized. Now, with all the demonstrations it's somehow "more important" & worth it... as in risking  multi super spreader events. As long as the covidiots are demonstrators then it seems acceptable. I & millions like me are crossing the road the other way. As in **** it.

Well, 2020 sucks.

TUP is actually referencing how many people he has been forced to re-educate in terms of his version of covid information... as in you are one of the moles he whacked - to talk some sense into them
