Argos did not spend a ton on MBT -- reportedly $217k in hard money, with $90 k available in playing-time bonus. I'm betting they gave Nichols more, but not much more than $300k in hard money, plus PT incentives. So they likely are spending about $600k combined on the two QBs, which is not out of line with what most other teams spend and is less than some spend on one guy.

I'm also betting MBT wins the starting job, and Nichols is gone after one season. No offence to Nichols, I just think MBT is a better QB.

ARGO are into the QB position for more scratch than we will be..217K in hard money for MBT, and no way Matt has signed for less than what will amount to at least 400-450k in money by end of season...however the spread it out.

A smart guess would probably have them at 650k minimum for their QB tandom this year...Zack has a chance to make what...490? if he has an injury free season and all goes well, and McGuire would be at 100k...tops...if that seeing as he was the 3rd stringer last year on an entry level deal so we would be just under 600k for both guys, and when you look around the league thats pretty good

Nichols' contract length is irrelevant as he can be released any time up to Labour Day, and neither he nor MBT are the long-term answer for the Double Blue. Its gonna be interesting to see who emerges as the starter and I expect that there will be a lot of tag-teaming behind center this year.

I'm actually not sure MBT couldn't be a long term answer - Just getting the same performance they got out of him last season would have him on track for a 5000 Yard season and a 2:1 td/int ratio with 68% completion and a pretty decent QB rating.

MBT played well last year on a pretty bad team....

In fairness... MBT also put up a tonne of garbage time stats after his opponents were up by a large score and playing a soft defense.

I wonder why SJ Green requested his release?   The thought of Nichols throwing no balls his way scared him away?

Kind of weird as it was said to pursue other opportunities..now is that in CFL and how would/could he have had any talks with anyone as he was a signed player...would that not be tampering??..or did he just want out of that **** show and see what he can land elsewhere..as certainly he will be signed somewhere...or is it not even football related other opportunities?

Pending FA so technically he could talk to any other team right now.

The release does seem odd. Sounds like an off the field opportunity, unless maybe the XFL?

Listed on CFL.ca as one anyway.

The release still seems odd.

I lean towards XFL based

You mean the league that starts...tomorrow? They want a rec on the twilight of his career? interesting.

I'm going to say it's likely another business/coaching opportunity. I don't see him jumping to another league at this point in his career.

I think he could step in and play by next week. He is a receiver.

Also, I don't think the XFL is super picky looking at their rosters.

If you can get paid to be closer to home I can definitely see him jumping leagues.

He doesn't need to be released for a business venture.

That is true. I'm assuming he would need to be released if he had the opportunity to be a CFL coach though no?  Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

It's amazing that folks don't see the huge potential for disaster going into a season with a QB who only played 4 games due to concussions last year, backed up by a guy who has only ever thrown 3 passes in the CFL. An experienced backup QB is needed to mitigate the risk and we need him for the entire training camp so he can learn our offence.

I know. Hamilton and Saskatchewan had terrible seasons with inexperienced back-ups.

You're right. No one has ever brought that up.
