The problem is Snoke specifically said he had watched the republic rise and fall and that the empire failed due to arrogance.  Certainly seemed older than Palps and not an ally.  I think JJ intended him to be Plagius but Rian killed him off and screwed up plans.

If Palps was the plan all along he shouldn’t have been saved for the final movie with no foreshadowing.

I do like JJ so I’m hopeful he can pull it off and correct the disaster that was TLJ

Good theory.

I still shake my head at Snoke. They teased him in the first, revealed him in the second, and killed him off before there was even an aura about him. Rian, I shake my fist at you! I'm planning to watch 7 and 8 before next Thursday but I'm not going to be happy with it!

Rian was the worst thing to ever happen to Star Wars.  Actually maybe not. He can’t be blamed for his boss allowing him to smirk his way through a **** measuring contest with JJ. Kennedy takes the blame.  JJ should have tasted with planning the entire trilogy from the start (which he did to a degree) and if he didn’t want to direct, they should have at least maintained his vision.  It always seemed to me Rian was playing a game of oneupsmanship, trying to screw the plan.

he literally screwed every character and plot from TFA. And laid down nothing new.   And then ended the film without any real jeopardy. Compared to how Empire ended with the heroes essentially defeated physically and emotionally.   Don’t get me started!!! Lol

And he had the perfect opportunity to kill off Fisher but instead, kept her in as the flying Dutchman.

Agreed with you guys.  I’m sure Rian was laughing his ass off by snubbing everyone’s expectations with Luke in the very first scene. Gross.

I know one of the original writers said they struggled with Luke because every scene he was in he began taking over the movie.   But I think they missed the point.   If Luke dominates the narrative why force a scenario where he plays The backseat to new characters?

im sure it was a Disney thing. And I like Rey. I also think JJ did a brilliant job sidelining Luke in the first movie. So he does take some blame for letting Luke be someone else’s responsibility.

I think there was a way to show us a super powerful Luke (like force crushing walkers and stuff) without side lining new characters.  Ben turning is fine.

id have made Luke’s story about his guy and anguish and his internal battle of what to do.  Does he see goodness once Ben and will refuse to fight him like he did his father or be forced to?  That’s an obvious potential conflict point between Luke and han and Leia.

luke goinf into exile is fine. Maybe looking for wisdom to help him know what to do. Maybe han blames Luke. Creating a rift between them and han and Leia.

maybe Anakin goes to Ben to show him the truth of the dark side to no avail and he tries to convince Luke Ben is gone. Like shows up on time to see Ben kill han. Hans dying words are to Luke to do what he must (so they reconcile at that moment).  You end TFA with an anguished Luke back in the fight.

it’s not like hamil needed to be sidelined. I thought he was completely enthralling in every scene he was in in TLd. They were just the wrong scenes.   His fight scene with Ben, he was incredible. It just meant nothing.

TLJ isn't Star Wars.  It didn't feel Star Wars, it was stupid in so many ways, and it didn't progress anyone's character.  The only real thing that Rian did in TLJ was kill Luke.  The rest of the movie felt like a filler episode.  You know when TV shows have filler episodes that mean nothing.  That's what TLJ was to me.  It meant nothing, it progressed nothing, and can be thrown away.  You want to watch it and enjoy it, go ahead, but as far as I'm concerned, it didn't happen, and Luke died of natural causes.

It's funny, because Rian touts himself as a Star Wars fanboy, he's apparently read all the Legends novels, he loves the movies, and then he came along and destroyed a series in one fell swoop.

I believe the premiere is tonight so spoilers will be all over the place.  I’ve actually been reading spoiler threads on this film for awhile but I’ll probably go dark on it now.

the one thing the Palps trailer showed us is that even though spoilers might be right there are context things we don’t know.  I’d like to not ruin everything for myself especially if it’s bad lol

i saw TLJ in Mexico cause I was there and couldn’t stand to avoid social media until I got back.  And even then someone ruined Luke’s fate for me. I remember disliking that but being so excited for the film.  What a let down. I’m much more cautious now.

come on JJ!   Just please have anakin!

Holy **** people are still soooo mad about TLJ?  Y'all got triggered hard.

I thought it was a flawed gem. And porgs are awesome.

Yeah, I get triggered when I think about how good episode IX could have been if VIII had not been so bad. The movie itself was meh but how it ruined the continuity is what bothers me.

And I will never forgive/forget the asinine and pointless casino scene.

I don't find it pointless at all... it gives me a chance to make sure the fast forward button still works!

I had no issue with porgs at all.  They were minor background characters and probably sold a ton of merch.

the issue with TLJ is that it wasn’t a one off.  solo sucked too but people don’t really talk about it.  TLJ was part of a trilogy so it’s awfulness is magnified.  Plus you could make a case it negatively impacted the entire brand.  JJ has his work cut out for him

Anyone who watched Lost to the end knows that JJ is a total hack.  The Force Awakens was the laziest possible photocopy of Star Wars, dusted with lots of dumb JJ ohhh-soo-mysterious plotting.  Like when the casino lady asks Han who Rey is and the scene cuts .... that's lazy ass filmmaking.

If TLJ dumps a lot of TFA in the garbage, that's fine.  Nothing of value was lost.

I'm fine with it being a copy as long as there are a few twists and turns along the way. I'm there for the fantasy, the pew-pews and the good triumphing over evil.

Solo had a lot of issues.  Generally I didn’t mind the plot. And Lando was great.   But the actor wasn’t right for Han. And plus they didn’t really have the guts to make him more unprincipled

Lost for sure was one of the greatest and worst shows ever.  But it shows you need a plan which TLJ didn’t follow.

TFA wasn’t lazy. It was a homage and it set up several story threads to be touched on later.  Which makes sense in part 1 of a trilogy.

Solo was good.  And I thought he played Solo well.  You are all wrong I am right, fingers in my ears...lalalalalalalalalaIcan'thearyoulalalalalalala

Yeah it wasn’t that bad. I just didn’t like the characterization of solo. I think it came too soon after TLJ too.

the actor is ok.  I know he’s widely considered to be awful.  But I’d have liked to see Anthony Ingruber.

I imagine they didn’t want an “impression” of Han Solo but the kid is spot on.

hero is searching for reclusive Jedi to aid in fight against space fascists

hero is captured by bad guys in lightning bad guy raid.  Bad guys are terrifying and good shots

hero stows critical information in droid

droid wanders the desert looking for help

person with mysterious parentage and boring marginal lifestyle winds up in possession of the droid

person with mysterious parentage is, in fact, strong in the force

person with mysterious parentage is gifted a lightsaber by wise & mysterious elder

captured hero is rescued from bad guy's installation by good guy dressed as stormtrooper

heroes blast out of desert planet aboard Milllenium Falcon

bad guys have a planet killer

bad guys blow up NPC planet with planet killer

bad guys point planet killer at heroes' planet

but planet killer is vulnerable to snub fighters!

heroes run around planet killer base, shooting stormtroopers and trying to sabotage its workings.  bad guys can't shoot for ****.

snub fighters blow up planet killer with seconds left to go!

amid the action, dark wizard confronts his nemesis one-on-one

heroes watch helplessly as beloved older-generation character is slain by dark wizard

I'm sure there are more but I'm out of time.

I mean, seriously, even for Hollywood, where everything is a copy or a sequel, that is some really photocopied plotting, way way beyond homage.

It's like JJ got the wrong directions, instead of "Make a Star Wars film" he got "Make Star Wars."

He had to do that because they were trying to help people get over the prequels.

Was it a copy? Yes. Was it enjoyable? Yup.

Was the last jedi a steaming pile of crap that ruined anything they tried to do with the new trilogy? Hell yes.

In summary, **** Rian Johnson.
