OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says today's federal Liberal party wouldn't accept political donations like those that got SNC-Lavalin in trouble in the late 2000s.

Trudeau says the party has improved its standards and, in his words, "that is not what happens any more."

The Quebec-based engineering firm reached a "compliance agreement" with Canada's elections commissioner in 2016, admitting that executives who'd left the company by then had convinced employees to give money to both the Liberal and Conservative parties.

The agreement was public at the time but a CBC report today reveals the names of the SNC-Lavalin employees the elections commissioner believed were involved.

Reimbursing the donors with company bonuses was a way around an election law that forbids corporations to make political donations.

The Liberals got nearly $118,000 under the scheme, compared with the Tories' $8,000.

SNC-Lavalin CEO Neil Bruce said in 2016 that the agreement with the elections commissioner was evidence that the company had turned over a new leaf.

apropos Ontario conservatives dropping tree planting program

Quote

China has reportedly reassigned over 60,000 soldiers to plant trees in a bid to combat pollution by increasing the country's forest coverage.

It comes as part of China's plan to plant at least 84,000 square kilometres (32,400 square miles) of trees by the end of the year, which is roughly equivalent to the size of Ireland.

The aim is to increase the country's forest coverage from 21 per cent of its total landmass to 23 per cent by 2020, the China Daily newspaper reported.

Re Norman Case. If not an impending election Liberals would have been more than happy for this guy to go to jail for nothing and their business cronies rewarded. Case was dropped to avoid a scandal. Full stop.

RCMP, nothing to see here, folks, move along.

Canada's judiciary is now riddled with liberals and Liberals.

This country is a corrupt joke.

'Buried' report suggests limited economic damage from carbon tax

Saskatchewan paid for a report that suggested a federal carbon tax would shave less than a tenth of a point off the economic growth rate — and then sat on the results

"Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment paid for a third-party study that suggested a federal carbon tax would do little economic damage — and then sat on the results.

Dated October 2017, a Navius Research report found much to like in the province’s own plans for limiting emissions. But its economic modelling didn’t predict economic catastrophe if Ottawa imposed its carbon backstop on Saskatchewan.

The province later commissioned another report that did, and announced the results with much fanfare at a press conference in June 2018."

Interesting. Not surprising.

I wonder what changed from one study to the next to have such polar results.

I cam across this when I was poking around:

Good news for Transcona and the Kildonans. Urgent care centres are great, as they still do a lot of the things that ERs do (wife got stitches in her hand at the Vic last summer, and was in and out in under an hour). Overall, I think that the reorganization makes a lot of sense (would you rather have three really good and properly resourced ERs, or six that are stretched too thin?). Like any major change, there will obviously be some bugs that need to get worked out.

I also think that they need to do a much better job of educating the public on what kind of ailments should go to the ER vs quick care clinics vs walk-ins and family doctors. It would probably be a good idea to have someone open a walk in clinic beside each ER, and have the triage nurse direct people to go there if they do not have an emergency...

(Should we have a separate Manitoba politics thread?)

Let's play connect-o-dots.

https://www.nationalobserver.com/2019/05/17/news/postmedia-lobbies-get-involved-jason-kenneys-oilpatch-war-room

"Postmedia has hired a lobbying firm with close ties to Alberta Premier Jason Kenney in order to participate in the United Conservative Party government's new $30 million public relations "war room" in support of oil and gas companies."

Nick Koolsbergen, previously Kenney's chief of staff and campaign director in the UCP's winning 2019 campaign, founded the new lobbying firm, Wellington Advocacy in early May, a few weeks after the Alberta election. Not long after, he filed a report with the Alberta Lobbyists Registry, indicating his firm was hired "to discuss ways Postmedia could be involved in the government's energy war room."

A spokeswoman for Postmedia, which operates Canada's largest chain of newspapers including the Sun newspaper chain, said on Friday that the lobbying was related to a commercial division of the media company, separate from its editorial staff. This commercial division produces advertising content that appears in its publications in what is known as advertorials — ads that resemble news articles and other editorial content."

So in essence former P.M. Harper will be working with the Post Media chain to create a ****-storm of disinformation prior to this falls Federal election.  Don't be very surprised if the tactics used by Trump and the Internet Research Agency to increase political and social discord among Canadians are used in full force to influence the election.  It's going to get ugly.

What Zontar is saying... Oh, those evil Conservatives. Doing the exact same thing the left wing NDP, Liberals & Greens as well as US environmental groups & so called "charitable organizations" like Tides & the Rockefeller Foundation have been doing the past 10 years spreading lies & fears about Canada's energy sector.

Tides, Rockefeller Foundation & other US organizations are registered in Canada as partisan charitable organizations & have been funding much smaller Canadian organizations who are against oil sand development. They also influenced the last federal election by spending $$$ in selected ridings across Canada dedicated to defeating Conservative candidates. The scary part are Americans are influencing our politics across the country at the provincial & federal level. These organizations will try again to influence who gets elected & who doesn't. Forget the Russians & Chinese. These American organizations are much more dangerous & can't be allowed to influence our democratic institutions.

It didn't take Ontario long to figure it out, but I still shake my head that they elected the slimeball.

Doug Ford Is Less Popular Than Kathleen Wynne Was When She Lost Power, Poll Suggests

The premier’s PC party would come in third place if an election was held today.

"TORONTO — Ontario Premier Doug Ford is already less popular than former premier Kathleen Wynne was at the end of her time in office, new research suggests.

Ford has a net favourability of -53.5 per cent, meaning more poll respondents dislike the premier than like him.

Almost 20 per cent of the 996 Ontario residents polled by Mainstreet Researchsaid they have a favourable view of Ford, while 73 per cent said they have an unfavourable opinion of him.

In April 2018, Wynne’s net favourability was -35.3 percent."

"If an election were held today, nearly 40 per cent of Ontarians would vote Liberal, the poll found. The NDP is in second place with 24 per cent support and Ford’s ruling Progressive Conservatives are in third place with 22 per cent, a 10 percentage-point drop since April."

The Liberals were (are) a tire fire and the NDP has never been able to climb out of the hole they dug themselves. I'm more amazed that the PCs elected him leader. This will prove to be a long term disaster for them.
