CFL Adjusts Draft Rules

This was rumoured a while back, now it's official.  No more NCAA Juniors.

TORONTO – The Canadian Football League announced today that it has adjusted its eligibility rules for players with non-import status in the CFL Draft.

For players with non-import status playing in the CIS, they will be eligible to be selected in the CFL Draft three years after completing their first year of CIS eligibility.

Previously, a CIS player was eligible to be selected after their fourth year of post-secondary education.

In addition, the CFL also adjusted the eligibility rules for players with non-import status playing in the NCAA or NAIA. They will now be eligible to be selected in the CFL Draft after their senior season of NCAA or NAIA eligibility.

This eliminates the “Red-Shirt Junior” from the Draft. Starting in 2014, all players eligible to be selected will be able to immediately join the CFL team they are drafted by.

“These adjustments will provide our teams with a better opportunity to select the best players available who are ready and able to join their club in training camp that season,” said Kevin McDonald, Vice President of Football Operations. “These changes are welcomed by our teams and eliminate a degree of uncertainty when drafting players.”

Glad they finally announced this, although I didn't know they would be adjusting the CIS eligibility as well.

That's very interesting, although it makes this draft year confusing because they're essentially going to be combining 2 years of CIS eligibility into 1 in the 2014 draft if I understand things correctly.

Why not just ask players to declare?  So if a guy decides to leave his NCAA school after his junior year, he has to sit and wait a whole season before he's eligible?

Why should that be a consideration?  Why would a player leave after junior year if it wasn't to play in the pros?  Seriously asking.

I don't really understand your question.  People get kicked out of school, people decide to leave for any number of reasons.  In the NFL, players are eligible for the draft 3 years after their high school class graduates.  When they want to enter the draft at or beyond that point, they declare for the draft.  I don't know why the CFL is sticking to the X number of years after they first enroll at a CIS or NCAA school marker, which has caused this problem they are trying to address.  Also thought they were going to address the disparity in access to junior players by making them draft eligible.
