And I doubt we've seen the bottom yet.

Not even close. I was just talking to my wife about the worldwide heat wave, ( US, EU, China, Japan, Uruguay...) and was telling her that as we slide into this you are going to see a huge amount of stress put on to society. If you buy into Jared Diamonds idea , environmental issues have been the cause of many societal collapses,  wars, genocides.... I don't agree with all his ideas but generally agree with alot of it.

People sure do like to prove Mr. Barnum right.

On ocean levels; the ocean rises about one foot every 100 years or so, has been for centuries. It's why we find remnants of towns 400 feet under water. The world was a vastly different place even 2000 years ago. Shorelines were not what recognize today. I can wrap my head around science especially the type that has nothing to gain from it's results.

The old "99.9% of scientists agree about climate change" chant. That would be almost all scientists, right ? So why should anyone believe what a biologist says about climate change or how about that pharmacologist or that zoologist because they all know everything about the climate, don't they ?

Keep on running scared people. it's amazing what brainwashing can do.

I thought there were more people waking up. Alas...

Of course climate is always changing.  The Milankovitch cycles guarantee that. It has been hotter. It has been colder. But that doesn't mean that what we are in now is natural. The vast, vast percentage of scientists involved with anything to do with our climate agree that our reliance on carbon fuels is affecting our climate adversely. And it's the speed that it is happening and the fact that it is a global phenomenon that will be the ass kicker.  When there has been rapid climate change in the past the effect on local societies has been devastating.

As far as changing shorelines don't forget alot of that is from erosion. But if you are talking changes over  thousands of years it's different .It allows time for societies to adapt. The isostatic rebound you see in Manitoba for instance  will eventually move Lake Winnipeg down to the city of Winnipeg . But the time line is about 10,000 years. What we are doing now world wide would be the equivalent of waiting till the Lake is flowing over the perimeter to react.

I'm  not a huge fan of the carbon tax at all but thats because I'm  not sure we are getting the best bang for our efforts .  But I suppose it's a start. I'd prefer to start with removing the up to 15 billion dollar subsidies Canada is giving to the oil industry. Pour that 15 billion directly into green initiatives.  I'd rather have seen the rail lines that are vastly more efficient have remained in place. I'd rather see an better effort to get cars off the roads in our cities. I'd rather see that money go into educating people on their personal responsibility for climate change.

Isn't invoking God on their side religion? The Middle East has been all about religion for a thousand years. Muslim vs Judaism vs Christianity. The Crusades were about religion. I mean, I'm not gonna go into a 3,000 word essay but I believe that religion has started more wars than any other reason.

Invoking God after you have decided to go to war is quite different than than having religion start a war or be the root cause. Yes a greater percentage of the Middle East wars have religion at the core but  not all. I guess I could make a list but I'd lay a fair bit of coin on my argument and I'm not a betting man. Many mistake what they hear about religion in a war with what caused the war. Religion would be well behind greed for land and wealth , fear ( possibly #1) , poverty,  racism....

Again, we come to the point where some "Christians" choose to believe that their interpretations of the Bible or even doctrine not part of Christian tradition entitles then to superiority over unbelievers. Yeshua, who is commonly called Jesus is recorded as saying that His greatest teaching was that we should love one another as He loved us.

Well said Tracker. Christianity like most religions has very good guidelines for life at the heart of it. But  I have always said that you can pretty much prove anything you want by using the Bible if you want to believe it word for word. Reading about the history of the current Bible and the history of the Christian church would really benefit alot of people.  What I find helps is to look at the real core, of the stories of some of the greatest religious figures, Christ, Buddha,  Lao Tzu.......how they acted, how they spoke, what they did...and you will find goodness and perhaps a belief system that benefits both yourself and those around you.

Edit: Good on you for starting this thread Mark H. I had thought of it a couple of times but wasn't brave enough  lol.

Temples were either destroyed outright or made into Churches.

This is a very  common thing when a particular culture is replaced. If really came home to me when I was in the York Minster in England. Touring below ground you can see it is built on an Anglo-Saxon church, a Viking temple, and a " pagan site. So,  if you want people to come to your church and embrace your religion ( which helps you control them ) then you put it where they are use to going.  It's not a thing that is discussed much but it seems to be a common practice.

Religion is the reason we are where we are now as a society. Almost every war was started because of religion. If we had no religion the world would be a much better place.

I hear this often but I totally disagree.  In my opinion MOST wars aren't started over religion but rather the combatants invoke God on their side once a war has started for other reasons.

  7. Everyone here, myself included assumed the Bombers would easily win the West. As did most fans on every other team. As did the media. And apparently so did the Blue Bomber players. It looked like the idea that they would cruise easily back into the Grey Cup had crept into their mindset. Well they and we just got served a huge slice of humble pie. We've got some stiff competition.  There is nothing like a good old ass whooping to open your eyes. They've got some work to do. Let's see how they respond now.
