  1. Here are numbers from Johns Hopkins’ website, which along with the WHO is a reputable site for accurate reporting (according to medical professionals and health experts who are on the front lines of dealing with this - full disclosure, I am married to one of those health professionals in this Province). Remember a couple of weeks back when Trump said they had 5 cases in the USA and would be at zero by April? Well four days ago they had 9,000 cases and 130 deaths. Three days ago it was 12,000 and 155 or so deaths. Two days ago it jumped to 14,250 and 205 deaths. Yesterday it was 19,000 and 260. As of now it is 25,500 cases and 307 deaths. That progression is the problem. Numbers are artificially low as well since there isn’t full testing yet. So cases are climbing at a rate of around 33% daily now and deaths are jumping at a rate of around 25%. Italy was at 3,000 deaths two days ago and are now at 4,800. That’s a 60% jump in two days. They had 41,000 cases yesterday and 58,000 today. So first of all, spare me the “flu has many more deaths than this in a year” BS. We are basically two weeks into the exponential growth stage. Extrapolate over a year without the “hype and overreaction” of locking down cities and guess where we end up? At a 30% progression rate, in one week from today the US has gone from 25,500 cases to 166,000. Fortunately the US death rate is about 1.3% of all cases, not the global rate of around 3.5-4 %, or Italy’s 8.5%, so we are talking “only” 2,150 dead next week, so yeah a 700% increase in one week. Canada is doing slightly better per capita, but the growth is similar. Or we can all quarantine and hope to slow those numbers. And since my spouse is essential services and treating those who have or will get this virus which has no known vaccines, and since the powers that be don’t have or bother to have proper filtered masks for those who test due to short supply, I’ll see your high risk with my family’s own. It is very personal and real to me. So excuse me if “I. Don’t. Give. You. A. Break.”, f*ck you very much. I don’t need another person who could infect my spouse walking around because they think this is all hype. At the very least, get off these boards and stop downplaying the risk. Sorry to everyone else for hijacking the thread. I'll keep my further comments to the COVID-19 thread.

To be honest most leaders regardless of politics are there at least partially due to leadership skills. Pallister has been great, I agree. JT is demonstrating calmness and strength. Cuomo should be in the White House. Only one guy can’t rise to the occasion. The flaccid orange goblin.

  7. Came across this while web surfing. The Hockey News has taken to the gaming world to see how the regular season would have finished up in a simulated exercise. Using EA Sports NHL 20, they have played all of the suspended games to track how teams would finish up the aborted regular season. Injuries have not been accounted for, so rioters are not completely accurate, but it is the best we have right now. As of March 11, the West wildcard race and the relevant players were as follows: Dallas 82 PTS, 69 GP (3RD Cen.) 😃 Calgary 79 PTS, 70 GP (3RD Pac.) 😃 Winnipeg 80 PTS, 71 GP (1 WC) 😃 Nashville 78 PTS 69 GP (2 WC) 😃 Vancouver 78 PTS, 69 GP 😩 Minnesota 77 PTS, 69 GP 😩 Arizona 74 PTS, 70 GP 😩 Chicago 72 PTS, 70 GP 😩 Here is how the games have gone since the season was halted: March 12 and 13 - https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/simulating-the-season-what-would-happen-if-the-nhl-continued-to-play-behind-close-doors Of note, Stars, Wild, Flames (in OT) win, Preds lose, and Coyotes beat Canucks on the 12th. Canucks now 3rd in Pac., Jets 1 WC, Flames 2 WC, with Minny 1 point out. And the Ottawa Senators are officially eliminated in the East. Cuomo has also stated that whatever happens "I'll take the blame" The contrast with Trump is on the surface, quite startling. Though, for people who have observed Trump for a while.....its no real surprise. No morals, no character, no leadership.

And this is why it is important to take precautions now, so we don't overwhelm is system. Spread out the rate of infection so we can handle it and maybe by some time for researchers to come up with some treatments that are more effective. Really you want the thing to end quicker infect everyone and let god sort them out, but that isn't a solution so we try and slow the spread so we can manage it.

I sniped this out of an LA Times article in terms of Trumpidiot trying to cancel the elections The Los Angeles Times’ Evan Halper takes up the unsettling question of what would and would not happen if the pandemic is still raging this fall and Trump decides it’s no time for an election. To make one thing clear, Trump cannot just cancel a constitutionally mandated general election: Technically, says Halper, Congress could delay the election for a bit in the case of an emergency, but when the president and vice-president’s terms run out on January 20, 2021, they are out of office, period. And in that case, it seems, the next-in-the-line-of-succession official who is still in office would be empowered to occupy the Oval Office. If, of course, there’s no general election in November, Trump and Pence aren’t the only elected officials out of a job, so crazy things could happen. While the Speaker of the House is third in the line of presidential succession, Nancy Pelosi is also up for reelection this year and so would face the same scenario as Trump and Pence if the election were to be canceled. The next in the line of succession who does not face voters in November is Chuck Grassley, the Senate’s president pro tempore. But then again, 23 Republican senators are up for reelection this year and would be on the sidelines as well, so we could have a Democratic Senate and perhaps a president pro tempore Pat Leahy (that position traditionally goes to the oldest senator of the majority party).

I used to post at CFL Horsemen but was perma banned last week because I dared to question the admin over some bullshit stuff he was saying. He said that he didn't understand why we are going thru all these precautions. Just let everybody get sick & build up a herd immunity. When he was told that wasn't a good idea because it overloads the health care system & that the goal is to flatten the curve so more people can be treated when needed. Then he told us his doctor said to him that this is just like the seasonal flu & it happens every year. His doctor just told to wash his hands & he's good to go. He didn't like his doctor being called out for giving bad advice & went into a rant basically saying that he trusts his "phuck..g doctor" over everybody else because he is medically trained & we're not. I answered back by saying the Alberta Chief Medical Officer didn't get her medical degree from the back of a comic book. When myself & a couple of others said his doctor was giving him bad advice he just went off on everyone. I was given a perma ban over it. I just wonder how many others he banned in his temper tantrum? I'm certain I was banned because he knows I'm a Bomber fan & just wanted to get rid of me. I'm okay with it & don't care. Guys like that admin (Geo Jones Dog) are just stupid dumbasses to begin with & on top of that he has a doctor giving him **** advice. Being perma banned there just makes me want to say my piece here & then stay out of it. Listen to your Public Health Officials. Follow their instructions. My wife is a nurse She has to work. She has no choice. You do. Do it for people like her that put her health & our family at risk to save you.

Pro tip: when you are not an expert in the field, and lives are at stake, maybe defer to the experts and shut the hell up.
    1 point
  35. It doesn't go both ways when there's a consensus among experts in their respective fields saying this needs to be taken seriously. It's no different than any other consensus based on scientific data. Yeah, the media has a tendency to sensationalize what it reports but that's neither here nor there when rates of infection along with death tolls continue to rise. To what influences is the WHO subject where it would be dramatizing this type of global event, anyway? And no offense, but calling this overblown and labeling it a hype job when the data flies in the face of both terms is about as cavalier as it gets. You can't show a lack of concern and then say "of course it's serious."
    1 point
  36. I can only hope we are looking back in this saying 'man we went overboard' because that will mean we did an effective job of flattening the curve and preventing what we are seeing in Italy (bodies overflowing in crematoriums). I'd rather over react than under react. (That doesn't include hoarding)

the issue I have is that people who don't take this seriously enough could end up killing someone. That's not hype, that's the reality of how quickly this thing spreads and could end up transmitting from you to a senior or immuno-comprimised person...

Yes Mr. Trump. You know that the american stats are unreliable because of their lack of testing right? In fact any percentage of the population you try and use right now is going to be a highly incomplete number simply because of the testing limitations. Lot of people will get this virus and have no idea that that's what it is because for most people it's going to be just another illness they get in the flu and cold season. It is also highly dubious to compare it to the flu. For one, we have a vaccine for the flu which can prevent further spread and many people have some built up immunity to it. This is a brand spanking new virus, no one has immunity and everyone is susceptible to it. Stop the misinformation in the name of arguing seblantics.
