Nichols longest completion of the first half was 9 yds. He did that once. One other pass for 7, all others were 5 or less. He didn't actually complete a 10 yards pass (and it was only 10, on 2nd and 15) until 8:12 left in the 4th quarter. His first big play, a 26 yard pass didn't come until after the 3 minute warning. How the coaching staff stood by this for as long as they did was baffling. But if the game plan was in fact to dink & dunk the whole way through, when it wasn't working, Nichols should be having a chat with LaPo when on the sideline and talk about "opening it up" . This probably never happened because it takes him out of his comfort zone of 5 yard passes. He can't scramble, he can't stretch plays with his feet to let people get open downfield, he can't recognize when to call an audible or point out a weak spot a D is showing, and when even the slightest bit of pressure gets near him, he folds like a cheap camping chair. This, for the extremely low price of 450K in 2019! I can't wait!!

There might be language in TSN deal that gives a bump in the fees if a new team comes in. They will have a extra games to broadcast and will get more revenue.

I Id also like to see some form of compensation when you draft a Canadian in the first round and the player leaves as a free-agent after just 2 seasons. Depending on the quality of the guy there could be a compensation system similar to MLB.

I am not sure that expansion can happen and have any increase to the salary cap. Expansion will add an entire roster to league costs and no extra TV money until the current deal with TSN expires - unless the current deal includes an escalator for a new team in the Maritimes. TSN will increase viewership from that area for sure, so it might be in the agreement already. Even without that, where is the additional money going to come from to pay a higher salary cap? Except for Saskatchewan, Edmonton, (maybe) Calgary and Winnipeg, who else can afford to keep less of their revenue? The CFL is not owned by a group of billionaires, unlike all the major North American professional leagues. And, guaranteed contracts will not happen. Sign a star player for 3 years and then he goes down with a torn achilles (for example). For the next couple of years, you have no money to sign a replacement and have to live with rookies, or maybe even go into games with a shorter roster. Fans would rebel.

This debate over who to hang is unresolvable in this forum. We do not know and will probably never know who called what play, and who screwed up . The evidence is in the game film and the logs of the OC, and we will not see those. Part of O'Shea's modus operandi is to trot out platitudes and not tell it like it was. There is the need to not throw a given player or players under the bus, but the assembled faithful would feel a lot more involved if we had a sense of what was really going on and how it was going to be addressed. All we have is speculation and that gets old real fast.

  22. It wasn't Streveler's first playoff game, either. One play doesn't make or break a game, anyway. Should Nichols have thrown a crisper pass? Yes. Should Adams have not given up on his route? Yes. Both players share responsibility in that play not being successful. However, that one unsuccessful play wasn't the reason the Bombers lost the WF.

  26. I'd suggest that a team from a metropolitan area as large as Toronto should see higher numbers that this when they play. An Argos game pulls in 503k. The average is 539k. If you take out Saskatchewan, which does tend to skew things a bit (easy to draw crowds when you are the only pro sport in the province), you still end up at an average of about 517k. The largest population center's team can't even manage average viewership. Yes, its numbers are not the lowest, but personally, I would have expected that if there really was a large fan base on TO, the numbers would have shown that, but they don't. For the TSN people, the real saving grace in that part of the province are the Tiger Cats. It's their viewership which seems to be the real driving force in Ontario

That's BS. I blamed both for their overthrows and BLM for his. I attach more blame to Nichols because he's vet not a rookie. He was warmed up. It wasn't his first and only throw. He wasn't in his first playoff game. He's paid to make those throws in the big game. I was responding to a poster who was blaming Steverler for the loss, which is ridiculous.

There was no salary cap so the rich teams could raid the poorer teams. The CFLPA was fine with it as a lot of players were making good money although most teams were hemhorraging money.

Average would be more like it, and again, when you consider the potential market, not all that great: Here’s a look at the TV ratings for the nine CFL teams compared to their 2017 numbers for the same number of games along with their attendance figures. http://3downnation.com/2018/09/21/cfl-ratings-report-team-team-look-season-far/ Here’s a look at the TV ratings for the nine CFL teams compared to their 2017 numbers for the same number of games along with their attendance figures. 38. Doing well in a game they've probably played and been coached in their entire life or a good portion of it anyway. The CFL is a different game, different rules, different places to place a ball, different balls even (though not so much anymore), more players, more movement, different types of D, different types of blitzes, etc etc etc. It is 100% not as easy as you're making it seem, to go from one to the other. Which is why the CFL doesn't have a multitude of QB's coming up that can excel in the CFL.

Not a big fan of that rule. It will give teams with elite qb's a distinct advantage over the rest of the league. Its good the way it is now I think. We went from having the special player rule and paying guys like Flutie a million dollars a year to removing it and seeing guys like Burris leave because they were only able to make 150k a year in the CFL. The way it is now a QB who's special can get paid a lot of money in the 500 to 600k range. Teams who are lucky enough to have a qb in this range likely have to make sacrifices on the rest of the team which you saw in Edmonton last season. Its good the way it is i think.

I wasn't aware that knee injuries cause quarterbacks to repeatedly toss the ball to opposing players. The league and coaches need to be alerted.
    1 point
  44. Lots of factors go into QB performance. But given that Nichols plays behind what is arguably the best O-line in the league and gets elite QB money (+$400k) - his 2018 play was a real disappointment. It's likely the knee injury limited his performance - he often seemed hesitant, rarely got much beyond the first read and, once in the grasp had zero escapability. Once a defender got a pinky on him - he just folded. Also, Nichols never was much of a rushing QB. This year he ran 15 times for about 50 yards total. All of that makes it easier for defensive coordinators to counter. Nichols should be taking a pay cut going into 2019 so Bombers can take some $$ from the QB envelope to extend Streveler.
