  2. CFL Game Notes.. The 2018 season opener between Edmonton and Winnipeg will be the earliest regular season game in league history by one day - the previous record was a game on June 15, 2004 between Saskatchewan and Toronto (21-10 Argos).  Season #61: The founding leagues of the CFL were formed in 1907 in the East (as the IRFU), and in the West in 1936 (as the WIFU). These two formerly independent leagues formally united in 1958 to form the Canadian Football League and standardize playing rules across the country. The 2018 CFL year will mark the 105th season of Canadian football, and the 61st as the CFL itself. QBs straight from college to a Week #1 starting role: The Blue Bombers may start rookie Chris Streveler in the 2018 CFL opener and if so that will end a 24-year period without that unique event happening.  East vs West - 2016-17: In 2017, East Division clubs won only 10 of their 40 meetings against Western rivals (29-10 for the West with one tie). That made it such that an East Division team captured the Grey Cup for the second straight year despite this wide imbalance in regular season inter-divisional play (28-11-1 for the West in 2016). The East has won the overall season series vs the West just once since 2005, but won the Grey Cup in 5 of those 13 years. CFL Season Openers: Going back to 2008 across 10 CFL seasons, here is a look at how our clubs have fared in their Game #1 with four teams tied at six wins out of 10. Calgary has gone 6-3-1 since 2008 but has not won a season opener since 2015. Montreal is 6-4 but have a two-year win streak (2016-17), the only club with more than one in a row. Saskatchewan is also 6-4 but have lost their last three season openers, the longest active opener losing streak in the CFL. Toronto comes in at 6-4 since 2008 while Hamilton has been by far the slowest starter at just 1-9 in season openers winning only in 2016. BC has started slowly having won only in 2016 over the last five years (3-7 since 2008). Winnipeg and Edmonton are each at 5-5 since 2008 but the Bombers are 3-1 over the last four years. Going back to 1958 and the formation of the CFL, the AWAY club has won MORE times than home clubs leading 32 wins to 27 with one tie (54% of the time).  Opening Rosters to Start 2018: Of the 493 players that appeared on the initial Week #1 CFL rosters here is a set of breakdowns of how they are made up with some details by Division and team. A total of 323 players returned to their same club from 2017 while 89 players moved from other clubs. For 2018, opening week rosters consisted of 16% of the players in their first CFL year. Total Returned to same team 323 (65.5%) TOR 48, HAM 41, CGY 40, EDM 39, WPG 35, OTT 33, MTL 32, SSK 31, BC 24 Veterans on New Teams 89 (18.1%) MTL 13, OTT 10, SSK 9, WPG 9, EDM 9, TOR 7, CGY 6, HAM 3 First-year CFL players 81 (16.4%) MTL 18, OTT 12, HAM 12, SSK 11, CGY 9, WPG 7, BC 6, EDM 4, TOR 2 Of the nine 1st Round picks made in the 2018 Draft, six appeared on 2018 opening week rosters. Only Hamilton (#1 Mark Chapman), Saskatchewan (#5 Dakoda Shepley) and Toronto (#9 Ryan Hunter) did not have their #1 selection join their season-opening roster. Among the 18 players selected in the first two rounds in 2018, 14 of those players (78%) made it onto 2018 CFL rosters.

  9. Bighill the "QB" of the D. It's not plug and play. There are plenty of variables that go into having a cohesive defence. Just like the o-line, you can have all the talent but they need to learn to work together.

  11. After the Pierce/Jyles era it felt like we brought in guys who could not run, had weak arms, passive decision making, relied on feathering balls into receivers arms as long as they had top protection, easily shellshocked.... it *appears* that Streveler does not have any of those issues which is exciting. I'm sure the guy will make lots of mistakes but if he can put the ball in the air and give the receiver the chance to fight for the ball then I'll be happy. I just don't want to see the guy getting scared and skipping the ball and holding on to long and getting sacked....

  12. Bond got cut because he refused to take snaps at RB........

  13. Bighill could be the general the defense needs. He just seems like a natural "lead by example" type and consistently puts his money where his mouth is. And I anticipate he'll be amped tomorrow.

  17. I suspect that we will see a good old-fashioned shootout tomorrow night between Streveler and Mike Reilly. Huck it, chuck it football from the finest QB in the game and the newest. I expect a slow start from Streveler until he figures out Darvin Adams can catch the ball as long as you put it remotely close to him. Then it's Streveler, Adams, Harris all night. Chris Streveler puts up 400 yards, 3 TDs, and 2 picks. Adams hits 200 yards, Harris runs for 120 and catches 60, with 3 TDs. Mike Reilly is forced to put it in the air after their run game proves ineffective against the improved Bomber front seven. Those 15 yard runs he loves to pull off aren't working and Gable is going nowhere. But he's able to find Derel Walker, Duke Williams, and Vidal Hazelton all night... worrying Bomber fans who are getting flashbacks to the last playoff game at IGF. Reilly throws for 350, 4 TD and 1 pick. Streveler drives the field in the last minute and scores, scrambling 25 yards on a broken play for the touchdown. 52-45 Bombers.

  20. As the old saying goes: a fish rots from the head down. And we're all plenty acquainted with the Melnykfish and its unique stench. Yeah, I'm sure everyone wants to play in the nation's capital these days. Perhaps Hoffman and his psycho fiancé are cut from the same stupid, ugly cloth. I honestly feel bad for Senators fans right now. The last year has been beyond disastrous.

  21. I wouldn't, because I don't want Fogg doing all returns without an American backup for his spot on D.

  22. Have Fenner and Bighill not already have played together in B.C...Gaitor too....I don't think cohesion on defense will be an issue to be honest

  23. Uh, did you watch the Riders final PS game on Friday? Collaros, Mason, Roosevelt, Holley, Carter, Bailey, Moncrief, Eguavoen, Hurl, Edem, Gainey... Oh, and the O-line. That's well over a dozen projected starters.
    3 points
  24. Yes, I answered the question. The Bombers should be higher because we have more depth, a better o-line and superior Canadian talent. Bridge has played in 17 games and Collaros hasn't won a game in years. Not much to look at there for experience.
    3 points
  25. cause the rest of the team is better, much better. plus for as much starting experience as the riders qbs have, they're not terribly impressive quarterbacks.
    3 points
  26. I have no problem with the Blue being projected low because of the QB injury. That being said Saskatchewan looked as bad if not worse then Montreal in the pre-season. I'd have them ranked lower then BC and only ahead of Montreal. If Collaros had performed decently during pre season then I can see them being ranked around 5th... but with his dismal performance and him not winning a start in a dozen years.... how in the world do they rank them up at 4th?
    3 points
  27. Fog said he never really got comfortable last year after missing training camp with the injury from the previous year. He was pretty good in 2016.

  28. Interesting indeed, but I think that means Ross actually sees the field more on short-yardage packages and, possibly, right after 3rd down conversions. Just based on how they organized it last year.

  29. Damn. That Front 7 though. If we can keep pressure on Reilly throughout this game, it's there for the taking. Definitely not as far fetched as some people think.

  30. Wolitarsky and Bowman are both above average blockers. They will help out a lot. I have visions of Demski dancing through defences as Bowman and Wolitarsky clear the way with reckless abandon. Wolitarsky and Streveler were actually teammates at the University of Minnesota in 2014-15.

  32. Lapo today implied that was on a receiver not running the right route. He said that a receiver was supposed to run the safety off but it didn’t happen, so the safety only had one look and went with it. I feel like everyone underestimates the difference our starting receivers and o-line will make. The throws Ross nade are the same regardless of if you have a third stringer or Bowman in there: check down check down check down. Somehow Streveller comes in with the same crew and makes Thompkins and White look like all stars because he’s actually willing to put the ball up in one on one coverage.

  36. Good rant. You do realize the power ranking change every week don't you? As I said, THIS WEEK, WITHOUT NICHOLS, where do you think the Bombers should have been ranked?. Personally I don't take any stock in the power rankings, I just find it funny that you are upset with where your team sits when you have no qb

  37. Couldn't have described it any better myself. we also have the best kicker in league...and the riders now are going with a basically unproven rookie...certainly to cost a game or two when the pressure is on The most bizzarre thing there is they have no depth at all behind any o-lineman..Canadian or American and are looking to start 2 unproven new Americans for whatever reason and truthfully sounds like a cap hell reason...so they had to jettison their best "proven" American....If you are buying Chris Jones's B.S about Bond being not better than who replaced him so doesn't justify keeping him then you are just plain stupid. All the greeinie fans there were raving about him..saying how he was clearly the best...couldn't stop using the term "roadgrader" but all of sudden he was sub par...what a joke If they suffer any injury to any Canadian they are in a world of trouble...not to mention multiple ones...They are so weak on the defensive and offensive lines with Canadians that it's almost comical...

  44. I would like to see these guys do a lot to help the team. downfield blocking by receivers, something which I think has been missing for a long time. don't know why. is it they dont know how to do block, or are a-scared, or if they think it's beneath them. pretty sure Andrew Harris, Flanders, and Johnny A. would appreciate it. We already know Peterman is willing and able to block. Probably Wolitarski too.. Hoping for a good game from peterman that guy was very impressive. to sum up. I'm hopeful. Very hopepful. As I used to yell in the days of Lancaster "get reilly! "

  49. Hey folks, Hope this is ok to post, if not MODs please remove. With the season just around the corner I thought I’d toss out the invite again for some Draft Kings CFL fantasy football. Last year was a lot of fun and we had a few Bomber fans from here join up and take home some cash prizes. Basic jist; - Draft a team using a fictitious salary cap - can select players from all four games during the week - entry is $5 per week and you only play the weeks you want to - leagues are generally 20-25 entrants (25 this week) with top five splitting the cash This is a great, low cost fantasy football option that makes watching some of the other games more enjoyable - at least that’s what we found. We have nine more spots for this week’s contest. We’d love to expand and get more regular players so if you have any questions let me know and if you’re interested the link is below. Cheers and good luck this year folks. CFL Thu 6:30 PM CST - $5 entry - 16/25 spots filled *** https://deeplink.me/draftkings.com/contest/draftteam/57112290
